Buying lies and stealing jokes.
The word itself, imo, is somewhat of an oxymoron; there really is no single "Spirit of the times."

Regardless, what's the current zeitgeist in your opinion. Discuss.

I'd say more and more people are aware that humanity is slightly off course/the veil is becoming more transparent. Then again, maybe that's just what I'd like to believe.

I'd say materialism is the Zeitgeist of this particular moment in history, and has been for some years now. We're the "gimme" generation; we covet and clutch, with little thought to our finances and futures. We want, and so we must have.

It's basically comfort eating, but with stuff instead of pie.

Wait. Pie was an option?
Dammit! All this time I could've been having lemon meringue.

Lime meringue pie.

Anything lemons can do, limes can do better.

How's that for a zeitgeist?

I would have agreed with this a few years ago—materialism continued to hold sway well past the 80s—but not anymore. There seems to be an growing belief that an individual's particular wants of the moment take precedence over the rights and property of others. Every single one of us sees this sense of entitlement in action every single day from the person who cuts in front of you in line at Starbucks because "I'm in a hurry" to the person who cuts you off from the left because this is their exit from the freeway to the person who believes they can use your property as their own and then calls you an asshole because you say, "I'm sorry. This little parking area is for my customers and you can't block my driveway to sell your puppies." (Yeah, that one's a true story.)

Hysteria seems to be the zeitgeist of today's world...

Ever since 2000 rolled over, you can't go 3 months without some group of people banding together to tell you that the world is going to end at such-and-such a date.

...

Seriously, though, I think for the most part there is no current zeitgeist... People are more free to be themselves than ever before in most of the world, and so commonalities are few and far between. This is how it should be - just remove the stupid violence and bastardity that runs rife whenever certain elements of the population think they can get away with it.

If humanity is slightly off course, what course should it be on?

Oh, my answer: It can be summed up in three words: "Watson Wins Jeopardy."

Okay, maybe it's this.

"People ask me if there is a God. I would say ..."

Consumerism. An endless stream of things that people "need" as well as need to update. Unlike materialism it's not owning the things that's in focus. It's just how the world works, things are not meant to last, you are supposed to have to buy a newer version within a "short" time. It's seen as a good thing since all that consuming creates jobs and so on.

Greed, oversentimentality and nosiness, accompanied by the sound by tinny earphones and the smell of a plastic cable melting near the fan of a computer motherboard.

Oblivion. Ignorance. Denial. A society where more people are concerned with who wins American Idol than the state of the planet or humanity. People with a great sense of entitlement who will not know how to cope when things are no longer handed to them.

Wow. That was uplifting.

Pie is always an option. Unlike cake, the pie is not a lie

(Says the woman who made peanut butter chocolate pie yesterday.)

We are in the middle of Polarization and The Law of The Excluded Middle. This will result in:

Registration for the Selective Service System will no longer be required by the US Government, however, all US citizens who turn 18 will be required by law to register either as a Democrat or a Republican. This will be named The Law of The Excluded Middle (some politician will think he invented that name). Changing political party will be seen as a more drastic act than a religious conversion, sex change, or even of a change of sports team allegiance.
