Hiya folks. I'd say the title is self-explanatory. :)

Just thought I'd do a little check, just for fun. What do you primarily think/know of our dear barren rock in the North Atlantic?

Just some things that immediately come to mind:

Geothermal

Gorgeous women

Fjords

Possibly a problem with alcohol

The story, true or not, that the Vikings intentionally misnamed Greenland and Iceland

The Reagan / Gorbachev summit

An ongoing experiment with non-gasoline (petrol) cars (I recently saw a documentary that featured a segment on Iceland)

Sheep (I'm not exactly sure why; it just comes to mind)

"Progressive" politics

Snorri and the sagas

The guy who absconded back to Iceland without paying his £2k bar tab at the local pub

Mid Atlantic ridge.

And yeah, vikings too. And snow and volcanoes and stuff. But the other things first.

Also guilty of thinking this.

"Annoying freak".

LOL!!!

Volcanos, hot springs, gorgeous scenery, ponies, vikings, wood buildings, no trees.

Thingvellier

Vikings

Volcanoes

rotten shark

knitting

horses

$1.00 to get into naturally heated outdoor swimming pools. Yeah!

The sign in the changing room "Please conserve the cold water."

We were there when Bush II was president. When we visited Thingvellier we could see the fault that is forcing Europe and North America apart. The guide said they were moving apart at ~6 centimetres a year. "Faster now that Bush is president," muttered my wife under her breath. So I think of that, too.

Mum's gone to Iceland... She wants her savings back!

Sorry, but the OP did ask for the first thing :)

The first thing I think of when I hear "Iceland" is "Greenland", because they have each other's rightful titles.

And that's all I know about them - Iceland is green, and Greenland is icy.

Yeah, I'm such a worldly person. ;)

Njal's Saga, and my personal favorite (the reason I learned Old Norse) the Orkneyinga Saga.

Also, Laxadela saga, but it's a lot harder for me to read; the syntax is very different.

And the Midnight Sun, and Icelandic Ponies--both of which I'll eventually witness in person.

I'm not touching the fermented shark; sorry.

Whales! I'm not sure why; maybe I was confusing it for the shark?

Then I think about volcanos, ice, and the ocean. In that order.

What's really funny is that I misspelled his name as Fisher and caught it before submitting the post.

My first stop, at Reykjavik, for refueling, when I first flew to Europe on Icelandic Airlines many years ago. On a prop plane. In a seat facing backward.

The tarmac was cold and windy, but in a foreign land, and I loved it.

Horrible Christmas advert with appalling can-can dancing and Jason Donovan, Kerry Katona grinning, 'That's why mum's gone to Iceland', all to promote disgusting froszen food.

But maybe that's just in Britain:D!

Er, me too for Kerry Katona, Coleen Nolan and the dry boak. (I won't translate heh heh)

But after reflection, something real mums would never buy: the most disgusting meal in the world - decomposed fish, can't remember its name, but it tastes as good as it sounds.
