I for one, like it better than the old WW TV costume. This is more updated. I mean, I always though WW wearing a skirt while kicking ass was silly for a 1970's show.

And yes, the eagle is rather keeping with the All American theme...

Some have complained because her boots are not the traditional red. But I think the blue boots go better with the blue pants. I think this costume keeps very much with DC comics more modern style for super hero's.

Oh, WW was created by a BDSM fetishist. I mean, it was swarming with nubile girls being tied up. Hence the Lasso of Truth and WW losing her power if she was bound by a man.

"The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force to enjoy being bound ... Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society. ... Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element"

Uh, that's what I heard, anyway.

The pic above looks pretty decent, but it's helped by having the 300 / Sucker Punch style filter and background. If it was a straight, realistic looking image it would be far, far less impressive.

Same with Superman's outfit... some things just look goofy in real life.

03-20-2011, 08:09 PM
FWIW, Lyra, there is an episode in the first season of the Carter series that deals with the material the bracelets are made of. I believe it's called "feminum." In fact, yes, I just checked the episode titles on my dvd boxset and it was, to be specific, a two-part episode entitled "The Feminum Mystique." And in those episodes, the feminum ore is actually silver. The Nazis come to Amazon Island and enslave the Amazons, forcing them to mine the feminum. It's all very heartwrenching, really. :P

Now what the comic books have to say about the bracelets, I don't know, and I can also attest that in later seasons of WW, the bracelets had, through some unstated alchemy, become gold with red stars on them. ::shrug::

I have nothing against her wearing pants or long sleeves, I have a problem with the new costume looking cheap. And I have to disagree that it's less ridiculous. It's the materials and design, not the lack of a skirt or bare thighs.

Cargo pants with stars spray-painted up the sides would have been better than what she ended up with.

It's not about missing the upskirt panty-shots, it's about the fact that the new costume doesn't take her seriously as a hero. Again.

Eh... it looks like he was going halfway for the generic 90's anti-hero look while still trying to keep the "classic" look. "We need to work some darker colors in there for no reason. And give her some sort of random bandanna on near the elbow, like the cool break-dancer kids wear. That is what they wear, right? And what about some sort of long coat or something that can give a pseudo-cape effect. That works so well with my guy Angel. Also, can we have her exclusively fight vampires? And can I kill her off meaninglessly when the series ends?"

I'm not mad at the new costume. She's an old school hero who happens to come packaged with a goofy, overly colorful outfit that isn't terribly functional for the purpose of fighting evil. Just like Superman, The Flash, The Fantastic Four, so on and so forth. This new costume is about as well as it will translate to live action without completely redoing her entire look.

Vespertilion

I think that's your own Batman prejudice talking. :)

I don't think Batman is the awesomest superhero because I love him. I love Batman because he's the best superhero!

Superhero comics are mostly written for the amusement of fourteen year-old boys. That is, for fourteen-year old boys of all ages. There's even a trope for buxom superheroines (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MostCommonSuperPower).

Heels should be banned from all action scenes in all media...

No, superheroines just need the spiffy fold-away heels used by Catwoman and Silk Specter II in the movies. (Next time you watch BATMAN RETURNS and WATCHMEN, keep your eyes on the heels, especially when flips/cartwheels are involved. Now you see them...)

If they're acting as superheroines at the time, then why would they need heels at all?

Good point.

My biggest gripe is that she doesn't even look like and Amazon (more gripe with the casting than the outfit, I guess). She could be a pre-teen Amazon, or maybe an anorexic Amazon... do casting directors even know who Wonder Woman is?

I do have to say, I'll take the spandex pants over the spandex panties any day.

I still think she's beefier than Lynda Carter. Maybe they should cast a female wrestler. Know any?

I'm sure I could track down a few. Now, whether or not they can act is a totally different question. Of course, we've got male wrestlers-trurned-actors, why not females?

Katie beat me to it. I couldn't open her link at work, so just in case we have 2 different links, here's one (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/30/wonder-woman-costume-change/), too. I like it better than the one we saw a few weeks ago; I think this one looks more suited to action scenes.

Agreed. I don't see how it has any shot at success. Even this costume, while better and probably easier to run in, is terrible.

The costume might be a little better, but she still looks like a pissed-off waitress in a theme restaurant being told to take the entree back.

I couldn't put my finger on why this wasn't working for me at all until just now. Adrianne Palicki is just not that hot.

Yeah, I agree. Slightly better, but the top is still shiny vinyl and totally impractical, and all the metal still looks like plastic. At least the boots are flats though. I'm wishing they'd go with leather. Oh yes.

In all honesty, as long as the actress bears even a passing resemblance, then I'm fine.

They were filming at night when it's 40s/50s, so bare shoulders are going to be cold.

You can see on a lot of indoor sets, too, that between takes the actors are bundled in coats because the AC is blasting so they don't sweat on camera unless they're supposed to.

Yeah, but who is? Hot, athletic, six-foot white actresses seem to be relatively short supply.

Lucy Lawless (5'10") springs to mind.

Besides, with all the people out there who are desperate for a big break, I'm convinced there has to be an unknown who'd make a fantastic WW.

I thought of Lucy Lawless, but I'd imagine that even she isn't wary of going into the lead role as another "super-powered warrior princess," the producers probably would be. It'd be like turning around and casting Tom Welling as Captain Marvel or something. You're trying to establish your own brand and differentiate from any sort of similar properties.

On top of that, with Lucy, she's 43. If you're hoping the series will last a while, then you're wary of going into season 7 with a 50-year-old actress as your superhero action star.

Anyhow, Palicki is tall, fit and fills out the costume. I don't know how much more Wonder-Woman-y any real person can look overall.

Jcomp
03-31-2011, 09:56 PM
Really... the more I look at the pics, the less I'm worried about Palicki pulling off the role or the look of the costume. It works for what it is, and she seems capable of pulling off the role.

I'm more concerned with the writing / stories being corny and the character being weakened / softened.

I'm glad this has (apparently) died a quick and ridiculous death!
David E. Kelly + Wonder Woman = me scratching my head!
The costume and the hair/makeup looked all wrong. She looked like Trailer Trash Woman. The script, from what I read, was mediocre.

I think Wonder Woman needs someone who takes her seriously as a heroine, someone who can take a more realistic approach, like Nolan did with Batman. There's a lot of potential there. It's really frustrating to see it all wasted.

Have you guys seen the Wonder Woman animated film? That's what I'm talking about. That film is really cool.

Apparently the suits at NBC looked at this turkey and realized there was not a hope in hell of selling this as part of their fall season. And this is a last-place network that was so desperate it greenlit The Event and The Cape.

Remember when the name David E. Kelley attached to a show was a license to print money and guarantee Emmys? :Trophy:

Nah. Me neither.
