NZ is a bit far for me, but I could make it up to Middleham. Since I don't drive, I would probably have to get Mr L to bring me, and he might balk at a day in the company of the Ricardian oestrogen brigade, but maybe there's a car museum nearby I can send him to :)

Middleham would be a stretch for me, especially with my current financial situation.
Bear in mind that Middleham is in the Dales National Park and will be heaving in August.
Bosworth would be more central.

Is York a possibility?

Also, DEATH TO ALL TUDORS! HUZZAH!

^^^Our new war cry. Must include the 'huzzah' response, or it's all wrong.

York would be better for me too.
I can drive there in 4 hours.

I googled to see if there was a White Boar pub in York but didn't see anything.

**sigh** I wish I was going.

You know what would be fun though? If one of you impersonated one of les Tudors and organised for them to all have a fun get-together at your pub and then you could all be there waiting in secret and have mass impalings and slaughterings!!

You know, just for old time's sake...

At a pub? Just imagine going in after said mass impalings and slaughterings and asking for a Bloody Mary.

I will of course have to stay with someone for a night or two as it's a long way back to Scotland, so be warned.

Home - but for how long?
How about...

a group booking to stay at one of the National Trust properties in or near York?

I used to stay at Fountains Abbey, in the Hall. Mind Boggling for my Japanese colleagues to be in that ancient building and sleep in beds which looked like original Elizabethan beds. But there are places in York and nearer to York which the Trust holds. Have to book early though as they are highly popular.

mccardy, I'm robbing a bank to get there. Why don't you?

Good idea pdr - but aren't the NT places also highly expensive? For example October 2 is mid-season and the cheapest cottage the NT have costs £191 for two people for a two night stay - and that is self catering so food/drink has to be added to that. I looked at some of the places the NT have near York because my niece and I are holidaying in Yorkshire this year. The four cottages I just looked at only sleep 2/3 - and the 2 are mainly double rather than single beds.
