Hydroponics

I'm not certain if anyone here can help, but my wip just told me that it needs information on hydroponics, which I know absolutely nothing about. Before I run off to start researching, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good information sources I can look for?

Also, has anyone had any personal experiences with hydroponics? In particular, what difficulties did you face, which plants were easiest to grow, and which more difficult?

Thanks for any help :)

A guess

I'm certainly no expert on it, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt. I thought hydroponics was "yesterdays news" -- so to speak. The people I'm aware of who tried it twenty or thirty years ago were not very successful for the most part. One big problem: the stuff they grew tasted terrible. Plants get a lot of their taste from the soil itself. Plus, the cost to grow hydroponically vs. the price they can get for their produce isn't economically.

I have seen some people be successful with "greenhouse grown" produce, particularly tomatoes; the plants are actually grown in soil in greenhouses.

I don't know if you are familar with expert websites or not, but just in case you're not I am going to list a few of them for you.

These websites list experts in many subject areas (doctors, teachers, parents, etc..), and you can contact the experts here free with questions. Here are a few sites where you may find experts:

Here's your best bet: Worm's Way. It's a gardening supply store chain that specializes in items like this. (This chain was started by the brother of a friend of mine.) They should have some of the info you need.

Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks alleycat - the taste thing is interesting, I can definitely use that in my story.

underthecity - I think I'll be going back to that site for my day to day gardening problems as well.

mrs75 - thank you so much, I think you just solved the rest of my research problems as well!

Alright, now that hydroponics is under control I'll go start reading up on medieval Venice.
