We purchased an old shell of a 1963 VW bug in November of last year.

She had some bullet holes, hence the name. We brought her home and stripped her to her pan.

Then stripped her pan.

Did some welding on the body.

And yesterday, without her shell, she rolled out of the garage on her own shoes - brand new of course.

I've taken apart my jeep and changed out the suspension and such, but I have never been a part of a build like this. This has been about the coolest thing ever. We'll be cruisin' the beach by summer. :D

The pans seemed to be a major problem area with old bugs (they would often rust out). It looks like yours was in pretty good shape when you got it, considering the year.

Actually, that is a tunnel and pan from another bug because once we got the body off we could see how rusted the original pans were. We'd removed them from the tunnel and got ready to purchase a new set but fell into a deal we couldn't pass up. The new pan we got had been abandoned down in the desert for 30 or so years. No rust except around were the battery sat. We coated it with por15 so it should never be a problem again.

Yeah, I remember a few people who had old bugs and sometimes the pan would just about fall out of the car.

The pan and everything sure looks good on yours now.

I think my brother had a '63 VW. It was his first car. My first car was a '67 Camaro; wish I had kept the darn thing.

My '63 beetle had narrow, clear, front turn signals with amber bulbs? So that don't look right, and mine had a different kind of battery than anyone else's car. (???)

It had the world's most useless windshield wiper ever made, if it rained hard at all, I had to pull off the road. The car was flat tomato paste red, white seats, and this huge canvas sunroof ... that leaked... It took me through college... and I do miss it, sometimes... but only when it's really warm and sunny out! =)

Since you're putting this thing together yourself, find a good windshield wiper! I swear mine had only one horrible speed! =)

You mean not on the fenders? Frenching the fenders was always popular. Otherwise I believe those are the correct turn signals for the year... though I don't know if we're replacing them. Might depend on it being European spec or not. The rules vary.

And we're putting in the gel battery. I have one in my jeep (in case I flip it the liquid stays put) and you can run them dead and charge 'em back up like a champ. Plus, won't eat the pan like regular batteries will.

It wasn't a 'new' battery thing, it was an 'old' battery thing, like maybe the electric stuff in mycar was too old? I just remember that I couldn't get a jump start from any 'new' car for fear of blowing my battery up? I wish I could remember why =)

The reason I remember the turn signal thingies is because that's how I told mine apart from anyone else's, mine were clear, maybe it was a state to state thing? =)

Mine looked like this:

-only a lot uglier!!

BTW Was still a great car, I'd take it back anytime.

(feed bag seat covers and all!)

LOL!

Great pictures. It looks like a true project of love.

Probably one of my biggest regrets is my mistake of selling my 1970 bug. Somebody convinced me it wasn't safe.

I miss my bug. :(

Oh my God my husband would cringe if he saw that. Poor bug all chopped up. I like the bajas myself.

A fat chick not safe? Pffffft.

He does love his bugs. If I'm counting correctly he's had four or five. This one stays though. I'm not por15'ing anything ever again. That crap won't come off anything... not even your face.

Very nice. I still would like a Ghia or a squareback, but the 63 needs to be finished first. We've chosen the color and since hubs was a paint guy for a number of years and I watched him spray bomb his old jeep, I'm sure it's going to be spectacular. It's a very odd shade of green.

There was an ugly hole - made for an oil something or other - in the back vent.

And I have to say, I was shocked it could be fixed so seamlessly.

So far I think the build is going pretty well other than digging the springs out of the back hubs the other night and then fishing them back in place through a half inch hole. That sucked.

Oh! My bug-guy says:

"If your hubby is good at fabrication, now is the time to make a small hinged access door on the front of the tube so that you can change clutch cables in a flash."

If you have any idea what that means? =)

tiny

Dang it. I posted something this morning... or so I thought. Here I am where it should be and it is not.

So, yeah, I know what he's talking about but cutting the tunnel would be a last ditch effort if something broke. We've had the clutch cable out and in in the last couple of days. Looks fine even as old at is.

You're awakening the long-dead car guy in me (I currently have two Honda Accords--yahoo). I can just sit and look at this picture and have memories of my younger days. You know there's a car nut in you somewhere if you can enjoy looking at a photo of a car chassis.

Funny. I actually posted a photo of my neighborhood in the Grandma Susie's House of Fun thread earlier today mainly because it was a photo taken last year when the grass was greening and the tree was just starting to bud out.

It's green all year... which means it has to be mowed all year. And all my jade plants are flowering.

We put the body back on the pan today. When we took it off, I threw my back out for two weeks. This time we used the engine hoist and some... scarier techniques.

My first car was a VW (bus).

tiny

Oh I'd love a bus, but they are untouchable in price. The goal for Bonnie is a road trip this summer up the California coast and then back down through Sequoia National Forest.

I'm waiting on word on a job which will offer the extra funds to continue working on her at this rate... and may afford us a sliding rag roof. Body work starts next week I think. I'm looking forward to learning how.
