If you needed a hide away from the relatives, here's the place. You know they are awkward, you know they'll hate everything you say and nothing will be good enough. Hide instead! It's the best way to deal with relatives! :)

Awkward family situation before Christmas happened. Apparently my brother bought the Cajun and I a nice big TV (he's the very generous sort).

When we opened it up at the Christmas Eve Eve party, my mom (as she is wont to do) says, "That was for them? I really wanted that one." And she continued to pout even after my brother reminded her that he offered to buy her one and she didn't want it. She wanted a mini fridge and a massage certificate from a really nice massage place.

If she had gotten the TV, she would have complained about that, too.

Last year, I bought her a robe, and she pouted that she wanted a Snuggie. I told her to wear the robe backward. And she did. And still pouted.

I love Christmas. But only with the awesome people and awesome relatives.

I'm hiding out from my nasty toxic mother. She found at least one reason why she didn't like any of her gifts. Then she went on a tirade about how "very upset" she is about anything positive going on in my life. She flat out said she'd rather me be buried in debt, miserable and have nothing.

Ol' Boy and I have hidden from the relatives for years now. Besides being non-christian total non-believers, we were heartily sick of the obscene buying orgy for and by people who didn't give two shites for either of us at any other time of the year. I've got grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews I've never met who expected gifts from Deal Ol' Aunt OFG and Dear Ol' Uncle OFB every year. We announced we'd be giving to charity in each of their names and found something else to do on any night any one of them wanted to have us over. The kids of Pine Ridge have never met us, either, but I bet they appreciate their gifts from us this year more than any of the strangers in my family would have done.

My parents died a few years back and, although I liked having the big family Christmas ordeal at the time, I have to admit that now celebrating only with my husband and kids seems peaceful. No sibling drama. No mother going ballistic because my father has asked what time dinner will be served for the hundreth time. No going in debt to buy family members I rarely see things they really don't want or need. No pretending to enjoy the turkey that's so dry that it sticks to my esophagus for three days.

Now I'm going to go wake my children up and give them a Christmas they'll grow up and run away from!

:D

The fools went driving in the several-inch-and-still-pouring snow, and NOT in a 4WD vehicle. I intentionally planned on staying here today and tomorrow. They'll freeze in the ditch waiting for a tow truck.

The tire tracks you see are where some guy came to visit, but I told him everyone went away. He' got a 4WD and a wench winch, so he'll have no problems.

There's no trace of the tracks where they left this morning.

We had a winter weather advisory, but that's been replaced with a winter storm warning.

Can someone please stop my kid from talking about the billion fucking Pokemon cards he got. I'd fucking kill for 5 minutes of silence.

All I can say is that's just sad...

I totally don't get the being all about gifts deal that so many seem to buy into.

I did my hour of socialising and now I'm going to basically hide because I'm beginning to annoy people. So, just wait until dinner for me to come out.

*sigh*

I'm still waiting for my family to leave. Everyone stopped by to say "Merry Christmas!" and to give gifts like there's no tomorrow. The place is filled with wrapping paper. Mother gave me some fruitcake for later today. *shivers*
Also, my uncle Eli likes to "spike" his eggnog with a little bit of whiskey so no doubt he's going to be drunk later today. I should probably do the same...

I did a little hiding yesterday (Christmas is long gone here in Australia ;)). Like, I came on AW about 3 times while people were still here, I went on the phone for 10 minutes (granted, it was to my brother in England) and I read a book in bed for about 15 minutes.

All told though, I don't have any reason to hide from my relatives. I'm easily the weirdest person in the family, so I have nothing to fear. :) Well, except grandad telling the same stories over and over again.

Actually, yesterday I was talking to him about learning to read and write music. (I got a Guitar Chord book from mum, which will be the closest to guitar lessons I've ever come.) Anyway, grandad made this grand gesture and motioned me closer. I knew he was going to have some profound trick for understanding music theory...

Instead he told me his entire history with music, such as singing in school and learning to play the organ. Nowhere was there any mention of how to learn music... just a "I did this, then this, then this," sort of thing.

Good work grandad. I'd only heard that story once a month since starting to play guitar 2.5 years ago... *sigh*

I'm waiting to hear from one of the the Cajun's kiddos, who is with their mom this Christmas.

He really, really, really, really, really wanted Cataclysm (part of the World of Warcraft thing) for Christmas. It was the main thing he asked for.

His mom already has the item. She plays the game too and bought the item the day it came out and already plays it.

His dad (the Cajun) chipped in for half of it, as a Santa gift.

His mom got the kiddo a Nook instead.

Now, he's flipped out about the Nook. He does like it. But I'm waiting for him to call when he realizes no one got him Cataclysm.

Not that a kid should get everything they asked for, and not that kids should be ungrateful... I'm more ticked at his mom than anything. (He'll get over it. It's more the oddness of giving money for one gift and the kid getting something completely different.)

I have one relative who makes me crazy. Today he was perfectly behaved. Mannerly. Nice, even.

Something's wrong.

My sister has a Christmas Eve party each year, and everytime something horrible happens.

Last night her husband had three of his fingers nearly severed, and her son was arrested for battery after a huge fight broke out in the house that ended in a neighbor's yard.

I'd left about ten minutes earlier, as I could see the way the wind was blowing at the time.

I talked to one of my nephews this morning who told me the story, and he said, "You should've stuck around last night, Uncle Dean. We could've used your help."

Sure, like I've been beating myself up all day after missing that melee...

Oh, my! If it's any consolation, some of y'all's stories have made me feel better about my brother, who can be an enormous ass. And he was, at the end today. It was fun before that, at least.

I'm still shaking my head at the level of asshattery some folks will display while trying to paint themselves the martyr. I mean full-on be a rude and insensitive bastard and then whine about being the only one who 'ever has to give' in between insults. *cue the twilight theme*

It threatens to depress me because he made my dad and sis feel so bad, but I'm just going to keep on letting folks make their own choices and try not to absorb any of it, you know? He was rude as fuck to me, too, but meh. There's no reason to even take it personally, it's so out there. He's just an ass in a Jeckyl and Hyde kind of way. *shrug*

Christmas is done and over with and I can now begin shaking this cloud over me away. Slept most of the day away, only coming out for the presents and dinner. =/
