So it's finally happened and your book is being made into a film. Who would you cast in the starring role?

I'd like Colin Firth to play a role but since I write children's fiction I'm not convinced he could play a convincing seven year old. Maybe the youngster from where the wild things are, but even he seems too old.

What about you? Who gets your leading role, and why?

In one of my books my MC is a dog based on my dog. I'd like to see her in the staring role

The one story I've come up with where I really saw a particular actor in the role was one about a black basketball coach taking over what had up to then been an all-white high school basketball team (this was set in the 1960s). I kept seeing James Earl Jones as the coach, who at first doesn't seem very imposing to the kids, with his frumpy clothes, bulging waistline, and homespun tales, but they soon discover that there's a lot more to the old coach, and about life, than they thought.

John Goodman as the voice of Bear, and in Hollywood tradition, some kid from an open casting call as the voice of Dennis Pearson.

Somehow open casting always makes me think of mining and putting kids down the mine. Maybe I should have an open casting call for my MC.

AW. A very nice place!
... would opt for the neorealism approach that was taken in the 1940s by directors like Vittorio De Sica. Instead of actors, I'd prefer ordinary, everyday people to play the roles who had no experience in front of the camera. That would work good I think. ps Excelent question BTW.

My book is about a female rock star with a drug addiction, and a music journalist who falls in love with her.

I like Emily Blunt (from Sunshine Cleaning and The Young Victoria) for Scarlett, the female rocker. She does all the fierce, angsty roles pretty well, and that suits this character.

For the journalist, maybe Gerard Butler?

That sounds an interesting idea. I might just use that when the time comes! ;)

Unknown actress for my MC, and her lover.

If I could swing it, I'd have a famous metal singer play The Devil - he'd have the right look, hopefully, amplified by make-up. And I can guarantee a metal singer would be able to distort their voice into a suitably evil tone without looking like they're about to choke. Perfect.

...

Actually, hell, I'd just have all my cast be taken from the world of metal music. From watching metal bands I'd never heard of on youtube, I know that a lot of the women in metal are gorgeous, which suits my lesbian couple, and many people have killer voices.

Added bonus is that the soundtrack would write itself. :)
