View Full Version : What's with these creepy Christmas images?

Srsly!

http://absolutewrite.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/krampus7.jpg

This is like the 4th "devil" image I've seen these past few days. While It's only my opinion, I kinda find them a tad bit disturbing. :e2cry: Now I do realize that part of the Christmas story includes the idea of being rescued from the clutches of Satan, but all I can say is "Shees!" These images just don't put me into the Christmas spirit!

Is there a backstory here?

And was anyone on the ModSquad and techy-administrator team taking bets as to who would be the first poster to ask about it? (Do I get a prize??)

It's an interesting reminder how myths evolve and the 'The Good Old Days of Yore' might have been the biggest myth of all.

Krampus. He's kind of like Santa's little helper, only...different.

Krampus thread is here (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197820).

I love the images, especially the one that was up yesterday with the huge fangs and the santa hat. But then I hate the usual sentimental crap of christmas.

ETA: Wikipedia entry explaining what it is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus#Krampus). All kinds of awesome. :D

My three year old son was sitting with me while I logged into AW. He got this concerned look on his face and asked, "What's that creature?"

Is it time to gather him on my knee and tell a good old fashioned Krampus tale? :D

Add blocker - it works for header images and avatars you don't want to look at. (Don't smack me, Mac, I don't use it to actually block your clicky ads at the top, just the pictures I don't like.)

I've been blocking all the Krampuses (Krampii?) because they creep me out - and not in a good way. We don't usually get so many of the same sort of image back-to-back during the hols.

(Don't feel bad PD, I've had to stop myself a few times over the last couple of days from creating this thread myself.)

If you use Firefox, you can Google "Ad Blocker". It's an add on that lets you right click on any image you don't want to see and it will give you the option of blocking just the one image or all images on the site.

Once you select the image, it disappears from your screen.

Not very funny, I admit, but it's actually the second example of wordplay I've used tonight.

So if I had a penny for every example of wordplay I've ever used... I'd have 2 pennies.:D

...and I've always found Santa scary....

... that reaction is fairly common. When witnessing someone being kindly and altruistic one has a tendency to think that person is up to something, sinister, or has some ulterior motive in place. We laud kindness and yet it is a characteristic few actually believe in.

Working in a hospital where we deal every day with real physical and sexual abuse victims (many children) makes these images less than office friendly for me. Particularly today's...

I guess actually seeing kids who can't sit down due to beatings makes Krampus pics less amusing. Just saying.

I agree that child abuse is horrible Phaeal - some people are far worse than any imaginary monster like Krampus.

That said, the images of Krampus shown on AW are from a long gone era, and I find them fascinating.

I love Krampus.

I've been trying to figure out what to do about this year's X-mas cards...running late as usual. And I stumbled on this thread. As soon as I get home from work, I'm going to start working on some Krampus art.

One year, I made out a card featuring a dragon, knife and fork in hand, getting ready to chow down on a knight. "Silent Knight, Holey Knight." So warped cards are my specialty.

That is quite creepy for a Christmas picture, even if i do know who Krampus is now! He seems confused that he is one of the Wren boys and his costume is way too sinister! If there was Booze on the table too the possibilities are endless for the whole situation:)
