At least we don't draw lots for a King of Misrule we later sacrifice. We have a Krampus and a six-page thread about anal glands...but we're still civilized, dammit.

Kyla Laufreyson

I think I can learn to accept Krampus, but uh...why do we have a six-page thread about anal glands? Or should I just go read it for myself to find out?

C'mon! He's not eeeeevil--he's just playing Bad Cop so there's a reason to stay of the naughty list. Bad kid in the distance with birched rump, good kids get to pet the little goaty beard and have their stocking-toe orange early!

I do! That was partly why Sunna had to make us the special one :D

I was both happy and a little jealous to see how popular he's gotten so quickly. (Grrr, he's ours--Yay! Krampus stuff!) His appearance on Venture Brothers probably had something to do with it, but we still beat Stephen Colbert to it by several days last year. Ha!

I change the holiday image every day between now and New Year's, but they won't all be Krampus pictures.

Kyla Laufreyson

This is pure idle speculation but--isn't it odd that a boogy man created today would probably have a mouthful of sharp, long teeth while this version sports a tongue a KISS band member would be proud of? (I'm guessing from the look of the artwork it comes from the early 1900's.)

Meh, well. Like I said, idle speculation. Last year I looked up the legend of Krampus. Maybe I'll give that a second read to see why the tongue fixation exists. LOL

Well, it would explain a few things.

sunna

I always felt that way about the oranges in my stocking, that's for sure. You pick it up, it's all heavy and bulky, and you think Rawk! I got some good stuff this year!

But no, it's a freaking piece of fruit from the bowl downstairs.

I foresee a new holiday video:

Just in time for the holidays! Get a copy for you and your immature drinking buddies!

It's
http://www.commenthaven.com/glitter-text-generator/donez/z4cf8f400bee5b.gif

SEE--Saint Nicholas the Peeper--that'll teach women to close their curtains!
SEE--The Most Ineresting Krampus in the World! He sneaks into houses! He snatches up children! Have you been a naughty little boy or girl? You'd better watch out!
SEE--Father Christmas the Woodcutter EXPOSED! You think he just fills children's stockings, but his true calling is supplying Krampus with those oh-so-painful birch switches!
SEE--The Naughty Ladies At Their Wildest! Sometimes being good is overrated.

WARNING--not for impressionable children or sheltered adults! If you still watch Frosty and Rudolph, then KRAMPUS GONE WILD is NOT for you!

Are you MAN ENOUGH to SEE the TRUTH about holiday "LEGENDS"?

And are they really legends?

ORDER TODAY to find out! Call 1-800-KRAMPUS. Only filthy lucre accepted. Operators are standing by! Remember--Christmas is Coming!

Are you ready to be Birched?

Cliff Face, it's Saint Nicholas (it's a Bishop's hat).

I never would've figured that out. The extent of my Christmas knowledge is:

Santa: fat, red clothes, black belt, white beard. Leaves presents.
Rudolph: reindeer, has a red nose.

And that's it.

Although now I can add:

Krampus: total win.

Vespertilion
12-04-2010, 11:50 AM
I like this one, in that it really shows that Krampus is a minion, and St. Nick is the one in charge of who gets birched. Makes Ol' Kris Kringle a more interesting figure.

(Well, aside from the regrettable minion positioning...)

Again with the tongue - you'd almost think there was a suggestion of something...subliminal...there, wouldn't ya?

Or sublingual.

Clovia, Miss Monster's postcard this year is full of WIN. The adorable weeping children are an excellent touch. :scared:

And I finally looked up what "Gruss von Krampus" means. Duh: "Greetings from Krampus." Now that's an interesting sentiment. What kind of greetings? "Happy holidays and prepare for torment"? "Hope you haven't been good because my birch switch needs exercise?" "Forget Santa, kids: You're MINE this year"? The possibilities are endless.

I do have to wonder about the tongue though. Why? (Or maybe 'why not?')

Synonym
12-04-2010, 08:52 PM
My best guess is that it's lascivious and may have been an artistic way of rendering that quality back 'in the day'. Apparently it's become part of the symbolism to depict Krampus in this manner. Kind of like Santa in a red suit for Americans--it just wouldn't be Krampus without a long red tongue. :)

Vespertilion
12-04-2010, 09:22 PM
I agree, Synonym. The tongue sets him apart from just any hirsute, goaty, possible-former-wood-spirit with a bundle of birch switches :P

"Ah! It's Krampus!"
"How can you tell?"
"Other than the fact that it's December, and St. Nick is watching through the window? The tongue."

ETA: And if the fascination level for the tongue has always been this high, it's easy to see why it's become such an identifier.

Synonym
12-04-2010, 09:27 PM
I've had a second thought. Medieval representations of devils and demons almost always have the tongue protruding so...it could be how this all got started. Add St. Nick and this is a very twisted bit of folklore. LOL

Hark! Saint Nick is almost here
Bringing joy and Christmas cheer!
But at his back the Krampus lurks
His fork-ed tongue all set to slurp!
Joyful children laugh and play
Naughty ones are snatched away
In his basket they will bawl
As on their rumps his birch switch falls
Hark! Saint Nick's abandoned you!
Krampus' tongue is your just due.

Krampus is St. Nick's helper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus), who punishes bad children at Christmastime.

A Krampus thread!

I thought I'd let you folks know that today (Dec. 5th) is Krampus day. Tomorrow is St. Nick's day, but today belongs to Krampus. I'm Austrian, and I've grown up with the guy. Today, I've eaten a chocolate Krampus. :D And at 6pm Krampuses will invade the town square (on horseback as well as on foot) to hunt for naughty children.

Lo, tribal Krampuses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GAGhCIVpik&feature=related), or rather "Perchten" (before St. Nick domesticated and renamed them). Very old pagan tradition. Wiki-Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perchta) to "Perchta", goddess.

In the folklore of Bavaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavaria) and Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria), Perchta was said to roam the countryside at midwinter, and to enter homes between the twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany (especially on the Twelfth Night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelfth_Night_%28holiday%29)). She would know whether the children and young servants of the household had behaved well and worked hard all year. If they had, they might find a small silver coin next day, in a shoe or pail. If they had not, she would slit their bellies open, remove stomach and guts, and stuff the hole with straw and pebbles. She was particularly concerned to see that girls had spun the whole of their allotted portion of flax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flax) or wool during the year.

So: why does the Krampus have a basket of oranges? The bad kids taste better with something refreshing...

Happy Krampus day! :D

SaraP

The skiing Krampus really threw me off for a minute. But whoa. Awesome.

It's raining presents! Quick, someone tell the snowman to run before he gets a concussion! There could be FRUITCAKE in that box! ...oh, yeah, snowmen can't run. Nice knowing ya, Frosty.

I would have thought Santa could aim better after all these years. That present is clearly going to miss its mark. :D

Levitation, folks! Ancient family secret, brought back from the Himalayas, filtered down to me through countless generations of snowfall, and brought to you courtesy of one old silk hat! Gather round, gather round, no shoving, folks! As you can see, I have nothing--and I mean nothing--in these mittens! Not a sleeve to be seen--of course I can peel this scarf, mister, but don't lose your head if I go outta mine!

Hmm. Last night, the 20th in the Southern Hemisphere, we had a full moon. Tonight, the 20th in the Northern Hemisphere, is a lunar eclipse.

Who got screwed?

The only thing in Bflo's sky tonight is snow. What a surprise.

So I needed a break tonight. This is what I did:

Yeah, but you Aussies got to see Haley's Comet a few years ago. D'ya know my husband waited for YEARS to be able to see it, only to have his hopes dashed?

He did see the lunar eclipse, though. :) Said the moon was kind of a coppery color.

Mr. Lily turned to an "origins of Christmas" show on History Channel last night--and they discussed the Krampus! http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn132/innfatuate/smiley_emoticons_krampus.gif

OK, the Father Christmas engraving up top today just reminds me of Aqualung. He's eyeing something with bad intent, that's for sure.

Perhaps that's where Jethro Tull got their inspiration?

Loved the strange time signatures Tull used in some of their songs.
