Calling all Canadians: we should coordinate an 'attack' on the national media, such as the Globe & Mail and National Post newspapers. If there's anyone near them who'd like to be the one to contact them, let me know. Otherwise I certainly don't mind adding them to my list.

Globe & Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/) -- Head office in Toronto, contact info (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/services/site/contact-newspaper.html#general) on the site

Yeah, do we have a boilerplate press release. I would love to have one that details the project, and I can add my own personal information to it. I'm a terrible PR writer, really. So if someone has a good one, please pass it on.

Anybody know anyone with the Associated Press??

I agree about having a master press release that we can all send.

Once we have that, I will contact the following:
San Francisco Chronicle
San Francisco Examiner
Oakland Tribune
San Jose paper

I'm sure I'll be able to find a lot more in the area, too.

Hi!

I have a poem in the anthology and I will be doing promotion in the seacoast NH area. I can expand that area if there is no one else doing promotion in this region.

I will be contacting:

All seacoast area papers
Boston Globe North
NHPTV
UNH radio

I will also be contacting my alumni associations and sending flyers to anyone I can think of so they can hang up a few where they live.

OK, then, once the PR is ready to go, I'll be sending it to ..

Gloucester County Times (almost guaranteed story; they eat that stuff up and I know one of their reporters, my son calls him Uncle Jim)

Courier Post (probable story there too)

Philadelphia Inquirer (will look good in their South Jersey section)

Fox 29

BTW, anyone from this area (SW OH and W. PA)? A bunch of us Penn authors are going to band together to do some promotions and publicity. Anyone from Cincinnati/Dayton area? I think it's a good idea to combine our effort so we don't end up sending 6 different press releases or calling for 5 different signings...

Maybe we should get a list of authors in each metro area... and go from there..

I live in SE Ohio--just across from West Virginia border, and I will be hitting the media there, including:

Papers:
Parkersburg News/Sentinel/Marietta AM
Marietta Times
Morgan County Herald

Television: WTAP News, Parkersburg, WV

Bookstores: Waldon's and Family Bookstores are the only chain stores. (Does anyone know if this book will be suitable for a Christian bookstore?) But we have a lot of little bookstores, too.

We have 4 local hospitals; I will be targeting the gift shops--and I may try to get an appt w/ the PR man of the hospital where my husband works to see if they would like to help w/ some advertising; this is the sort of thing they like to promote because they're also promoting themselves w/ it.

I'll be contacting our local Red Cross (Mid-Ohio Valley Red Cross). I know the financial development director, and she might have some ideas/help on promotion.

Radio: WDMX, WCVV (if we can market the book to Christians) WGGE, WHBR, WHCM, WKYG, WLTP, WMOA, WNUS, WRRR, WRVB, WRZZ.

Also, I'm traveling to Charleston, South Carolina a week from today. I don't know the area well (but my sister-in-law lives there), but I'd be glad to at least pass out flyers or something, if no one is covering that area. I might even be able to speak to the gift shop manager of the swanky hotel my SIL works in--she's a massage therapist there.

Please let me know.

I live near Canada's capital, so I plan to hit the following:

TV:

CJOH (an affiliate of CTV), A Channel

Radio:

106.9 FM The Bear (my husband used to work there and many friends still do), 106.1 FM CHEZ (Friends work there), 93.9 Kool-FM (friends work there), 100.3 FM Majic, 89.9 FM HOT FM, 580 AM CFRA (News Channel), 105.3 FM Y105, 99.1 FM CHRI (Christian)

Newspaper:

The Ottawa Citizen, The Ottawa Sun, local papers around the Nat'l Capital Region

I am also a member of the Canadian Authors Association (as well as the Program Coordinator for the Ottawa branch) and plan to write an article for the November newsletter which hits members and non-members alike. There is also an Ottawa Book Fair coming up in November, I believe, and I will speak to the president to see if she will allow either the sale of the book, or advertising for it on our table.

One question which I think someone asked but I'm not certain it was answered. Jenna, do you feel we should urge people to go online and order the book or do you feel we should buy...30 copies, say and try to sell them on our own, at writer's meetings, to friends/family, etc?

In regards to approaching christian stores and stations, I see no reason why we cannot. The intent of submissions was to write about inspirational and strength-enriching subject matter, including and not limited to stories of faith. Jenna had also requested no foul language so that it wouldn't be limited to adult material. I would suspect that it would be safe, though Mac and Jenna would be able to veto the christian connection if they saw fit.

A bunch of us Penn authors are going to band together to do some promotions and publicity. I'm in! Let me know what you're thinking. Here's what I have going:

I'm going to try to set something up with a locally owned bookstore. Maybe they can buy some copies to have on hand (or I can) and we could do a reading or release party to encourage sales. I've already sent out a mass mailing (about 100 people) to all of my family and friends with the webpage and the title of my story so that they can be ready to buy when it's released. I've received about 30 emails back asking where they could purchase it and when, so that's AWESOME.

And I was thinking of doing something with our local Starbucks literacy program. A friend of mine is the manager at the Downtown State College Starbucks and we're working on a program to start in the new year for children's literacy. Basically it's an afterschool program where local writers and singers come to read to the kids, either original works of their own or something classic. I was thinking I could do a reading with the parents for the anthology immediately following a kids session. Still thinking of other ideas.

Oh yeah! I mentioned it to 2 of my Comp Lit professors and both said to send an announcement/press release to the head of the department and they could set something up with writing groups/student/faculty news organizations to get the word out there.

Well when the press release comes I plan to do lots (I'm uk based and you know it's such a lil old country that means they are all in my sights!)

But just to dip my toe into the waters (I tend to do the first one slow with zero confidence and then ramp speed and confidence from there) I made an actual contact.

To the Editorial Director (I had to choose from a list so hope I didn't goof there) of New Nation (Britains No1 Black Newspaper) via their web contact form.

This is what I sent him:

Dear Mr Michael Eboda:

Subject: Hurricane Katrina fund raising efforts.

I would like to alert you to the soon to be released anthology called 'Stories of Strength' whose full profits will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. It is the brainchild of writer and author Jenna Glatzer (www.jennaglatzer.com (http://www.jennaglatzer.com/)) and contributed to primarily by writers from the AbsoluteWrite community which she founded and runs (www.absolutewrite.com/forums (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums)).

As a contributor to the anthology, and as a member of the AbsoluteWrite moderator team I am writing in this instance to enquire which departmental Editors might consider covering the newspiece, as it lends itself to straight news, human interest feature, or author interview.

We will be releasing a Press Release as soon as all details are finalised but your paper may prefer to also cover the story in its infancy and I am certainly happy to answer reporters questions or your further enquiries.

The anthology is intended to provide a long-term continuing source of relief funding, and to be a thoughtful gift that can be given by anyone to anyone for any occasion, but particularly by those who feel uncomfortable giving luxuries at a time when so many suddenly have so little.

I am sure so many of the readership of New Nation will fall into the category for whom the book is intended, or be eager and relieved to read of positive aid efforts.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response.

Yours Sincerely

I actually just found out....literally moments ago....its no longer an outside shot. When the press release is ready, it will get in front of the people that it needs to. At that point, it will just be up to the person that is reading it, but it is guaranteed that he will see it.

Keep thinking guys, and keep asking any venue that pops into your mind. To turn down a request for such a noble cause would be sacrilegious.

There are no limits here folks. The writers, copy editors, cover artists and organizers have no personal stake in this venture. I.e. profit.

People like that. Many have little to contribute. Fourteen bucks for a book could be within a doable range for most.

Ask,tell, and show. Lets blow the lid off of this anthology.

It is a good thing we do. Let us do it right, with honor and pride.

We are World, and the World is in us.

You guys have me pumped. I won't accept anything less than 100,000 sales for this book.

Ken.

first of all, way to go OneTeamOneDream (and don't we all LOVE that name btw, says so much about what we are all doing right now, doesn't it)!!!!!!

and then wow!

Of course I did my best I could think of, but I was pretty sure it was in general a bad effort and you'd all tell me what I should definately not do next time - so, I was posting the text mostly in order to have a better version for next time.

Yes whoever wants to use any parts of it, or tweaked versions please do - but do show us all your versions, I think it will be great to have plenty of examples to work with as we all go about contacting similar sorts of places.

But lets all remember to think (even to the level of meditation) about who we are sending to so that the most appropriate wording for their unique ears/mind can be found.

I'm sooooooooooo excited about this project  And I feel very blessed to be a part of it :hooray: Keep this in mind everyone, we're doing a good deed for a lot of people, and you can be certain that God will bless each and everyone of us. I'm also certain he'll give us each what we need in our efforts to spread the word. A possible chance to be on Dr. Phil--we've already been blessed, and there's sure to be many more blessings along the way. I pray for this project every night. :Fairydust

Keep up the good work everyone, and I'll keep it up on my end too. :Coffee:

Calling all Canadians with stories in the anthology:

I want to contact CTV's Canada AM (http://www.ctv.ca/canadaam) and see if they will cover our story. Often they will have people from across the country on air at the same time. Therefore, if any other Canadians in the anthology would be willing to get up early to be on TV, let me know. That way I can include you in the pitch.

Mind you, this is all assuming they will A) cover the story, and B) want to interview us on air. Jenna, would you be in as well if this were to come about? CanadaAM often talks long-distance to folks in New York studios.

For those of you not familiar with it, CanadaAM is Canada's number one nationally broadcast morning news and entertainment show, and they are very big on human interest stories.

Hey Chunky,

I'm all for this to help you out. Mind you I'm way on the other side of the country in Halifax. So I wouldn't have to get up AS early as you. :) If you get any more info, just PM me.

And...WOW! Dr. Phil and possibility of Oprah is AWESOME!!!! This book will go through the roof with that kind of publicity!

Vanessa,

It looks like you and I are in the same part of the world. I have personal contacts (radio, newspaper, and television) here in Lafourche Parish, Terrebonne Parish, and Assumption Parish. I have a personal contact over at Fox 8 News in New Orleans. I also know a few reporters at WDSU Channel 6 News, CBS Channel 4 News, and WGNO Channel 26 News in New Orleans. I can't guarantee that the 4, 6, and 26 reporters will remember me (over the years they've covered some cases that I've worked), but, once they learn about the project, I'm sure they'll be all over it.

When the book is released and/or when the official press release is completed, I'll contact them and get things rolling here. If they want to do interviews, I'll get with you (and anyone else in this area) to see if you're interested. I read here where someone mentioned book signings. I don't know enough about POD books and bookstores to know if this will work, but I think a book signing at some of the bookstores in New Orleans (once they get back on their feet) would be a huge success. (Just thinking out loud.)

Please let me know your thoughts. You can PM me at billyjbourg@wmconnect.com if you want to collaborate on this.

[QUOTE=BJ Bourg] I don't know enough about POD books and bookstores to know if this will work, QUOTE]

I plan to relay in the press conference, and in the press release to the newspapers, that those who want a copy signed or otherwise, call the bookstore to make sure their copy is on hand. That way the store can gauge the number of copies to order, and add extra copies for walkin sales.

And I'm smack-dab in the middle, near Ottawa. Keep me in the loop, too, Chunky.

Jenna, I was actually wondering how many of the authors are from Canada. Perhaps it would do well to separate and announce the authors by country, so as to show the world-wide effect of our giving. I have a feeling that our Cdn reporters up here are going to ask us how many are from the Great White North. btw, for those who don't know, it isn't ALWAYS white up here! ;)

If Lulu can get the book on Amazon.de it might gain a few more readers. A lot of books from the US and UK are avaliable via Amazon.de which has the great advantage that German buyers get them free of shipping and taxes.

I'll try to get the info up on the review website of Literaturschock (no big deal, I think) and contact the FAZ, one of the great German daily magazines with a nice amount of readers who have enough English to enjoy the book. After all, it does make a perfect Christmas gift.

The PR rep for my local Redcross called me today about helping promote the Stories of Strength anthology.

They will set up a press conference were T.V. stations, newspapers and media will attend. Sue K.told me that they get very good response from the media for these type of things.

With the other events they have going, she suggests we wait until the first week of Nov. to start the local push.
That may be a good idea. The book should be listed by Ingrams then, and easy for the bookstore to order for the signing, the next weekend.

Yes Patti. I would assume that the press conference would be during the day, during the week. Then, the signing on Saturday. The problem is, how many books does the bookstore order?

If I send the press release out two weeks before for the paper, then people could pre-order. If I do that, it kind of dulls the effect of the press conference.

A bit of a canundrum.

I guess I'll talk to Jay and Mary, the owners of the Little professor bookstore, and yes this bookstore is good sized, and new. If I can get them enthused enough maybe they'll take the dive and order a hundred.
It isn't like they won't sell during the holiday season.

I'll have to see how it shakes out, and leave it up to them. I'd hate to see a large group with nothing to purchase.

Here's the letter I wrote:

My name is Jill Miller Zimon, I reside in Pepper Pike and am a columnist and contributing editor for Cleveland Family magazine. I also cover the Gates Foundation's $35 million small schools reform effort in Ohio as implemented by the KnowledgeWorks Foundation (in Cincinnati). You can read more information about me and my writing at www.jillmillerzimon.com (http://www.jillmillerzimon.com/). My opeds, essays and features have been published in The Plain Dealer, The Sun Press, The Chagrin Valley Herald, The Writer, Writer's Digest, Connecticut Parent and other print and online publications.

I belong to a writer's community, Absolute Write, that will be publishing an anthology of stories about strength, the proceeds of which will go to the Red Cross. Absolutely all services are being donated or paid for by those involved in the effort and all receipts will be given to the Red Cross.

Here is a link to the website (http://www.storiesofstrength.com/) that's been started while the lead editor, Jenna Glatzer, completes the book. Ms. Glatzer has published several books, including the forthcoming authorized biography of singer and entertainer, Celine Dion: For Keeps. (http://www.shopsonymusic.ca/thestore/celinedion/forkeeps.asp?lang=en) Well-known science fiction author Orson Scott Card, Christian writer, Robin Lee Hatcher and actor Wil Wheaton have essays in the anthology.

I would love to know how we might be able to maximize the potential this book has to help the American Red Cross. At your convenience, I hope you will e-mail or call me so that I may learn about whatever opportunities there might be to assist the Red Cross's needs through the promotion of this book.

Very truly yours,

No one asked me to post this comment here and I hope no one is offended that I am saying this about blogher. I just figured since they have a HUGE base of folks and are letting us talk about/promote Stories of Strength there, you all might want to take a look at what they do and say (it's just a blog about blogging but it's pretty cutting edge and informative etc.) Just another good resource I think for writers, anyway.

FYI - had lovely phone call with local Red Cross person. She said that with efforts like this one - especially with authors all over the states and outside, the National office would handle most aspects. However, when I get the press release and start contacting the bookstores etc., she and I will re-connect and talk more about what they can do for us.

Does anyone have suggestions for how this kind of contact can work?

Re my local Red Cross:

I found out last night why the local woman I spoke to was less than enthusiastic about SoS. My husband saw her husband yesterday and casually asked him how his wife was getting along, and how work was going for her. He let it slip that she's a little fried along the edges right now w/ regards to work. (That certainly sounds reasonable, too!)

When things are rolling along a bit more, I'll give her a call back. I'm even hoping that some info may leak down to her from the other local RC's, so she'll be more receptive.

I know our very own Robert Rohloff is probably going to be a tad annoyed with me for outing him like this, but yesterday he sent out nearly FIFTY press releases in one Canadian province alone, and today he's going to try to do the same in another.

The man is a machine! Thank you for that herculean effort, Robert! :Trophy:

Been on the phone most of afternoon with various media sources acquiring email addresses, faxes, etc. - plan to email press release to local papers and bookstores tomorrow. NTV News is very interested in doing an interview - yikes! I emailed the press release to the news station and they are going to contact me asap. Excited but little nervous - I've done an interview for a local newspaper before but never TV. Hope I do ok - knowing it's for such a good cause makes me feel good about it though.

Did any one think of sending a review copy to Locus or any of the other genre mags. We have Orson Scott Card in the anthology and I know my story falls into the category of SF/F. Not sure what other venues of this type for other genres might be good.

Carol
www.carolhightshoe.com (http://www.carolhightshoe.com/)

It's funny - we have cross tabulated by region, but not by genre. I am also a spec fic writer (though my piece in SoS is non-fiction) and a goodly cross-section of the Aussie spec fic community reads my blog, so we are covered there. I am honestly not sure how we would get to the wider community, apart from through Locus.

If speculative fiction writers could give me their pen-names, then I am happy to do a specific blog entry for that and then you can all just link to it or mention it in forae or something. I like this approach, now I think about it, because I can post about the blog entry in at least 3 diffferent forae without being intrusive or off-topic.

Cool! Let me know when you will be on as I get NTV via StarChoice.

How exciting! My assignment editor at CJOH hasn't responded to two emails. I may fax the press release instead, in case the information isn't getting to him. I will hopefully get the PR to the local urban and rural papers, to news and music stations on the radio, and to the A Channel and perhaps CBC here in town.

Have any of the Torontonians approached a bookstore about a group signing? I could possibly make it down to be with you four or five (I think we're at, Charlie?) in Southern Ontario.

I have a couple bookstores and a local Davis Agency that I'm going to pursue in the next couple days. My life is so crazy-busy. I'm doing the best I can under the circumstances.

Contacted most newspapers and media stations in my area.

Just heard back from my neighborhood newspapers that they're going to run a story in the upcoming issue. They might be interested in doing a longer piece in future issues.

A city paper here said they don't usually do stories on book releases, but may be able to work the story in, somehow. We'll see.

No phone calls telling me how handsome I am, yet.

I know! It happened over in the 'on your marks...' thread too. Saritams8 quoted a post I made and now it looks like she somehow jumped into the future to read a post I hadn't made yet! Something went weird with my time-zone/daylight savings time settings. It appears to be okay now.

I re-contacted local Red Cross today--the woman I spoke to last time was a lot more receptive this time; she's not so swamped now, plus I think she was feeling guilty for not following up w/ me earlier.

She said they have a good relationship w/ the local shopping mall manager, and perhaps we could turn a book signing into a media event.

She also said they could provide a link from their local RC website to SoS website.

When I spoke to her this time, she sounded a bit more impressed. (I'm hoping that after she sees Richard's work on the site, she will be even more so.)

On a different note, is anyone here a Costco member? The Costco Connection features Costco members who do neat stuff, and I'd be happy to pitch anyone who's interested. (I'm not a member-- my parents are, so I stole their magazine.)

Another thing to keep in mind: If your local paper doesn't do an article on you, consider submitting an essay about it yourself. You can also send it as a letter to the editor-- like, "Hey, it was nice to read about that gal in XYZ town who did that great thing. I thought you might like to also know about a project I'm involved with for disaster relief..."

Watch for magazines that take first-person essays, too. I'm planning to write one and pitch it around to some newspaper op/ed markets. What usually works best is if you don't write an essay about the book, but more about what the experience taught you, or how it changed your perspective, or unexpected benefits from it, or...

I think mine will be a takeoff on one of the posts I wrote on the SoS site-- how I always felt kind of useless when I saw celebrities donating a million bucks to important causes, and I could usually donate $30 or less. But that this book made me feel different about that-- that even if we can't match the scale, what we're doing matters, and we can help a lot more people together than we could have alone.

If he does, I'm going to ask him if there's anyway to have more than just me on - especially since I'm in Cleveland and some of you are much closer to Cincy. Can you stand up and let me be sure I know who you are and where you're from so I can let Joe know??

Shwebb, Pattithewicked and Ken Schneider - you are all in the vicinity right - one of you is in Columbus I think?

COOL! Jill, could you put that in the "Look, Ma, We're in the Media" thread, too? Lulu would like to see all our media appearances, and I'm linking to that thread from the SoS site so people can keep up with us.

Shwebb, I did ask OSC's assistant about linking us, but she didn't answer-- I'd love it if you'd ask the webmaster.

This morning I contacted the owner of http://www.dotcomwomen.com . Lata puts out a weekly newsletter. As she is in India, I didn't expect an answer until tomorrow or later. To my surprise, my newsletter came today and "Stories of Strength" has a nice big spot in it complete with links to the site... twice. The newsletter goes out to 4200+ members.

I haven't been talking much about contacting anybody. I'm just doing what I can do and hope that some of those places are interested... I have had a little positive feedback but nothing really substantial to date... until this. Lata is such a sweetie, I had to give her a plug for her site.

I went to our local newspaper, The Logan Banner, yesterday and spoke to the EIC about running a piece on SoS. Not only did he say he would run the piece, but he took my picture with the book and said he'd like to do a front page feature on us.

He said he would have someone call me in the next couple of days to do an interview. The paper's a daily, so it shouldn't be too long after the interview that the piece gets put in the paper. I'll let you all know when they put it out!
