It dawned on me the other day that as much as I love Dirty Harry, I don't think I've ever seen the sequels. Are they worth watching? I don't mind a bit of dated 70s action even if they're not as great as the original.

Are they worth watching?
Yes. Except for The Dead Pool.

That's the last one, isn't it?

In my opinion, Magnum Force (the first sequel) is worth seeing, but the rest are crap. But even MF's bad guys cannot live up to Andy Robinson in the original.

Maryn, ready to see them again

That's sorted, then. Magnum Force is in my to be watched pile.

I've got a soft spot for The Enforcer because it was one of those films I watched over and over as a kid. It's worth seeing for Detective Lacey uh... Tyne Daley... running around with Clint Eastwood. The plot is as daft as a bag of hammers though.

Yeah I liked Magnum Force and The Enforcer, they were the must-see tough guy movies back in the day. I actually thought they were better than Dirty Harry, which I watched just a couple of weeks ago, but time and memory play tricks so, shrug.

To this day, the thought of Cagney & Lacey terrifies me, but that's another story.

What they all have are those epic chases that last twenty damn minutes. Shots of people running up and down back alleys, over rooftops, busting through the set of some in-progress porno and then, like in The Enforcer, (spoiler) Clint barging into a church to blow away some shotgun-packing criminal dressed as a nun.

Yup, they don't make 'em like that anymore.

EDIt - my good friend Derek informs me it was Tyne Daley wot shot the nun. I know who I want on my quiz team. :)

Agree. The movie has some really great moments. Really great.

And while Sudden Impact is no great shakes, having some really forced dialogue, piss-poor acting, and a weak plot, it's got a couple of moments, too.

The Dead Pool has nothing...except for Jim Carrey making a fool of himself.

It did have a giant harpoon gun.

But I feel bitter about that because when I first saw the trailer, I thought it was a rocket launcher. That would have made it better, I'm sure.

I think you did see a rocket launcher in a trailer... Perhaps the wrong trailer (?). They used a LAW in the Tyne Daley sequel.

Nah, it was The Dead Pool. But you're right, they did have LAWs in The Enforcer.

Christ, I remember making replica LAW rockets to play with after seeing them in that film. Plastic piping stolen from my dad, snipped out blocks of text from a VCR manual taped to the side (doubling as launching instructions) and a length of string tied through holes at either end so you could sling it over your shoulder....

Kids today with their Googlebox and flaptops... don't know what they're missing!

What's a LAW?

Light Antitank Weapon or suchlike, one of those little tubes you pop to twice its length so you can fire a wire-guided rocket at a target (or person, if you don't like them).

Not to be confused with Judge Dredd's "I AM THE LAW!"

I've always thought that Robinson should've got the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Dirty Harry", or at least the nomination.

you have to watch a sequel to hear the line "Go ahead, make my day"

My favorite line from Sudden Impact: 'Nobody, but nobody, puts ketchup on a hot dog.'

You will all be thrilled to know I watched Magnum Force the other night. Over the top in places, oddly paced in others but I still really enjoyed it. The next one is on my Christmas list. :D

I actually think Magnum Force is better than the first movie.

I've seen them all. Lesson learned: don't be Harry Callahan's partner.

I wouldn't go that far although it was definitely enjoyable. Also strangely refreshing to see a film be so violent without attempting to justify or apologise for it.

Magnum Force is definitely a good one. Almost... almost!... as good as the original, but not quite.
