Under your user control panel (cp) select Edit Options, on the left side of the screen, from there, look under Messaging & Notification check/uncheck the box about Visitor Messages.
I'm terribly tempted to respond with "Yeah, well neither does your mum" which is what my kids used to say about everything, but I won't. Because I'm old and dignified.
On the topic of vm thingies, if they're anything like facebook I don't want one, thank you very much. You don't know who's scribbling on your wall... But I do think someone should set my message thing up for me - although I suppose I could just wait till a fourteen-year-old comes by.....

And not just anyone can see them, only members of AW. There is an option you'll see to allow only contacts and moderators to view your VM's, but I'm not entirely sure what a contact is or how you go about assigning them.

You can also turn off that option, as I've done, if you don't care to receive visitor messages.
I think he's just referring to facebook's "wall", where any of your friends can leave any comment they want, and depending on your privacy settings, anyone can read them.
