Why can't these people grab an ounce of class and a gram of dignity and shut the hell up?

Cheering you all on!
Aw, I loved Christopher Pike as a teen, and I was excited to see he had something new (and was hoping my favorites would make it into the reprinting of his books that's also happening lately)

I'm always curious about the thought process with these trainwrecks. At what point does "I'll make multiple fake accounts and defend myself as a stranger!" come across as a rational or sane route to take?

This is why writers have to be so particular about fact-checking. Hell, it's not like it's hard. It's not that much harder to doublecheck it, either, just in case that wiki article is inaccurate.

I factcheck everything, from figures of speech to street slang in the historical novels I'm editing--and writing. I feel I have to. But if I make a mistake, I'll own up to it.

As for writing gushing reviews of your own work--seriously, dude? Seriously? How pathetic is that?

The best advice for a writer on the internet--READ what you've written before you hit send. If it makes you look like an ass, DON'T SEND IT.

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks...

Enough said.

I hope I have the grace and dignity to shut the hell up for a bad review. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether good or bad. I think responding just makes you look like an ass.

but that would equal zero publicity. Must. Self. Promote.

I never imagined that writers would do these sorts of things until I came here. Add one more thing to the list of stupid mistakes I won't make as a writer.

I like to think I'd hold my hands up to it, take the piss out of myself, be gracious and hope people remembered my sense of humour rather than the fact I screwed up.

He's not wrong, though, and his work is brilliant. It's everyone else who has a problem. Sheesh! Didn't you GET THAT?!

I have to admit, when I saw this headline the first thing I thought of was the Christopher Pike who was Kirk's predecessor as captain of the Enterprise. So I'm very glad someone /else/ posted this in the thread before me!

Wow. That was interesting. I've never heard of Pike before.

The person speaking for the author said the book was from a 15 year old POV who knew nothing about Turkey. That makes sense, except--you would make sure the facts were accurate anyway. Fact checking is very important.

I've never heard of Christopher Pike either. And, until recently, I thought the Amazon was a waterway in South America.

But just to defend the lad for a second, and I'm not him, really, what about all the Fact crap that Dan Brown starts his books off with?

So maybe if Pikey had started off with:

Fact - Istanbul is the capital of Turkey.
Fact - The Knights Templars didn't like Ankara - too much traffic, nowhere to park your horse.
Fact - The Gobi Desert's bigger than you think it is.
Fact - The Knights Templars cut down all the trees between Istanbul and Tibet and made the desert.
Fact - I got all this straight from the mouth of the horse that bit me.
Fact - I'm richer than the Knights Templars ever were.

Oh, have to go. I sense a blockbuster coming on. :D

Yours with a chuckle,

Whacko

I used to read CP back in the day!

what a random story. I'm with Scarlet, I'd hope I'd own up to the mistake and say, "Ha, clearly I didn't google that hard enough, huh?"

I guess it's hard when you put so much effort into something, but still. Class is class.

Yeah. Me neither.

Gah! I think my post-high school mental process just rebooted.

He was sort of a next step author for those who read RL Stine. A bit darker, more horror with less humor. Made a good bridge between Stine and Stephen King.
