No short ones allowed! :D Some of mine:

avuncular: pertaining to an uncle. it's just awesome that this word exists. why is there no "avauntular" though?

palimpsest: a parchment from which writing has been partially or completely erased to make room for another text. Evokes a sense of writing surface as precious and rare. Love it! Got this one from the totally bitchin book of the same name.

prolegomenon: beats the hell out of "prologue" IMO

What's yours? Include the definition for those of us whose SAT cramming days are long behind us :D

mammothreptos, late Greek word in which the Spanish mamotreto evolved. It means "raised by granny", in a way to say "lazy and fatty" and defines an object, more often a book, that is large and uneven.

oikoumene or Ecumene; another Greek word meaning the whole inhabitated world.

Energumen, literally defines someone possessed by a demon, but figuratively defines a person with an histeric fit.

Triumvirate, a government led by three people, that's how my country started.

You can't go wrong with defenestration.

Obfuscating onomatopoeic oligarchies???

:D

I've been in a silly mood ever since I got onto AW today. Can't IMAGINE why...

My favoritest big word EVAH: obfuscate. To confuse, bewilder, or stupefy. Otherwise known as using a word more than two syllables long in my homeroom class. :D

Psychometry is a pretty cool one, too--it's divining facts associated with an object or its owner by handling or being close to said object. I think it's going to make an appearance in my WIP (the concept, not the word, 'cause it doesn't fit--bummer...)

Myself speculates about the amusing consequences brought upon prohibiting monosyllabes within the current thread.

I'm a fickle vocabularist. I start off loving a word, but then some other catches my eye before I can profess devotion to the first. Thus the words I'd most like to call on never call me back, leaving me alone and miserable on Saturday nights. So here are some favourites from vocabula.com, abducted and presented for your delectation.

alexithymia (ah-lek-sah-THI-mee-ah) — inability to describe emotions in a verbal manner

apodyopsis (ap-oh-di-OP-sis) — 1. the act of mentally undressing someone. 2. imagining women naked; undressing women mentally.

borborygmus (bor-bah-RIG-mes) — a rumbling noise produced by the movement of gas through the intestines

clatterfart (KLAT-er-fart) — a chatterer; babbler

crepuscule (kri-PUS-kyool) — twilight; dusk

clishmaclaver (KLISH-mah-klay-ver) — casual chat or gossip

doryphore (DOR-ee-phor) — one who draws attention to the minor errors made by others, esp. in a pestering manner; a pedantic gadfly

ecdysiast (ek-DEZ-ee-ast) — a striptease artist

epicaricacy (EP-i-kar-ik-i-see) — taking pleasure in other's misfortune; schadenfreude

futilitarian (FYOO-til-i-tar-ee-an) — one who holds the view that human endeavor is futile

hebetudinous (heb-i-TOOD-i-nes) — dull-minded; mentally lethargic

kakistocracy (kak-i-STOK-rah-see) — government by the worst or least qualified citizens

mythomania (mith-oh-MAY-nee-ah) — a compulsion to exaggerate or tell lies

noctilucous (nok-ti-LYOO-kes) — shining in the night

omphaloskepsis (om-fah-loh-SKEP-sis) — contemplation of one's navel

oniochalasia (oh-nee-oh-cha-LAY-see-ah) — buying as a means of mental relaxation

quatopygia (kwah-tah-PIJ-ee-ah) — the shaking of the buttocks while walking

siderodromophobia (si-der-oh-droh-moh-PHO-bee-ah) — fear of trains, railroads, or train travel

steatopygian (stee-at-oh-PIJ-ee-ah) — having an excess accumulation of fat on the buttocks

Archipelago. My brain loves this word because when you read it, the emphasis is unclear. It could be read essentially emphasizing any of the syllables. So in my mind I go ARchipelago. ArchiPELago. ArchipelAgo.

Off in my head.
floccinaucinihilipilification- The act or habit of describing or regarding something as unimportant.

I love this word, can't pronounce it or even really spell it without aid, but I still love it.

Apothecary--one who prepares and sells medicinal drugs.

For some reason, whenever i see this word i think of a pig. I have no idea why, but i think Swiss Family Robinsion may have had something to do with it.
