I've just got back from a few days camping and decided I really appreciate central heating. A sleeping bag is fine until the early hours of the morning. A radiator and thermostat is better.

What would you miss most if it wasn't around?

This week, I'll nominate air conditioning. It's uncommonly warm for this area, and humid as well. My husband and I often bicker over whether to turn on and leave on the A/C, but this week, he's gotten no arguments from me.

Maryn, noting it's already in the mid-80s and it's not even 9:30

A/C would be second on the list. Again, very nice when it's there, but I've lived most of my life without it in my home or car so not having it is just standard living--but I also live in the northern mid-west, so it's not as critical as it is in other areas of the world here.

I'm with air conditioning in the summer and central heating in the winter. Oh, and the money to pay for them.

Yeah, I vote indoor plumbing.

For one entire month this past summer we could not use our washing machine, could not wash dishes in the sink, could not use our shower, and could not flush the toilets. We had to go use other people's showers and toilets. Not fun.

(it was a sewer problem that needed to be fixed)

Hot water. We don't have AC (even though it's smokin' hot) or a dishwasher and I could live without a toilet, but I can't function without a hot shower when I get up.

Running water and indoor plumbing.

I've just had to spend some time being medieval and hauling buckets of water from down the street at a portable "well" for cooking, drinking, etc. Our water's off AGAIN while they fix a main. (This has been going on for over 20 years at least twice a year.)

I would second all the mention of air-con, but as it happens, the house I'm living in right now has shitty air-con. Like, vents in the ceiling... you turn the air-con on to the lowest temperature you can get, and the house still doesn't cool down. It takes roughly an hour and a half to drop one degree Celsius lower than what it was. And it doesn't come out of the vents in any sort of force... you hold your hand up to the vent and you feel roughly the equivalent of two people breathing out slowly... it sucks.

So I already know I *can* live without air-con... that said, I value air-con as much as plumbing, but when push comes to shove, I'd rather have plumbing than air-con.

I'll also add another modern convenience I couldn't live without - energy drinks. Without energy drinks, I'm a zombie all day, even with coffee.

Other than the obvious ones like hot water and heating and indoor plumbing, my biggest one would be....

coffee. As in, good quality espresso with foam. I'd cry if I could never have that again.

(not so surprising bearing in mind my username I suppose, LOL)
