Write a story (under 3000 words) about a man returning home to find his house's gone...

I'll try and keep this up more regularly. For now, here's a whole thread of prompts for humour writers that some might not know about:

Prompt for this week:

Write a satirical obituary or eulogy about yourself, written from the POV of someone who doesn't like you very much, but doesn't want to come right out and say so at your funeral. Come on, make fun of yourself!

Is this thread no longer updated?

01-29-2008, 09:22 AM
Well, it doesn't seem like it is to me, but, from what I see in this thread, it seems like someone may take over.

01-29-2008, 11:23 PM
Okay, I'm bringing this back for...a week.

Write a story (less than 2000 words) about the murder of some rich, but disliked, guy, who just happened to have a(n) <insert important item here> before he died.

Can I bring it back now?

Write a story (precisely 17,201.6 words) about a really sucky prompt. For an example of such a prompt, please re-read this post.

Dead thread deserves a new chance at life.

Horror-esque: write a story in which the thing that incites terror is never revealed.
or: center your story around a mask.

Happier: write from the POV of a puppy
or: your characters go to a place they've never been before

If anyone is in want for prompts, your unicorn-of-love is here to supply some.

-write a story centered around a piano (not necessarily in location, lol)
-write a dialog-only story about a surprising discovery
-make up an original fairy tale. The moral? Never trust/talk to strangers. (horror writers especially rejoice)

Just wondering is this not running anymore?

Just wondering is this not running anymore?

It was running strong in 2005, and some in 2006. A few people tried to bring it back in 2008, and one person tried to in 2010. But I guess you found out because I'm the first person to respond and you posted 10 months ago.

Porting a scenario over from another thread for everyone to play with:

Create three different short stories of under 1,000 words using the same people, under the following scenario: You're a teenage girl in high school and went to a party last night. Your mother is asking you about what happened the next morning. You also need permission, in the same conversation, to go out with the same group of friends the following weekend.

In the first conversation, you're excited to tell her about the party because the guy you've been gushing about for the past week actually talked to you!

In the second conversation, the guy you've been gushing about ...but only to your closest friends, is a college guy your parents would freak out about if they knew about, because he's a senior, and he offered you a hit off a joint.

In the third conversation, you're the mother, and your daughter has been secretive lately (because of her crushing on the college guy, but you don't know that.) You want to find out if there were drugs or alcohol at the party, but have no clue about the college boy until your daughter slips up during your questioning about drugs.

Good luck!

Are there any other good short story threads on here?

Write a story about two strangers trapped underground in a subway that lost electricity. Tell why it happened. How they got out. And what their bond becomes because of it. Have the story end in two ways, happy, and horribly tragic. And go!
