I need info quick!

I'm going to post about this in Bewares & Background Checks, too. What I need most from this board is basic information.

Some friends of mine are in a band and were recently solicited by this organization: http://www.cat5music.com/. How do things work in the music end of this business? If someone e-mailed me saying they found my work on a website and wanted me to submit, I'd need a fire hose to put out all the red flags. Is it different in this scenario?

I told them not to make a move while I checked into things and I hope the Absolute Writers can help them out even though I've barely posted since the board moved.

Tell them to be very careful about signing anything! There are a lot of music production companies out there. Some are legit, others can ruin an artist's career. They should pick up a copy of The Songwriter's Market and do some research. If they decide to do business with this company, but have ANY doubts about the fine print or what rights they are giving away, have an attorney look over the contract!

Tell them to check out the Music Player forum: http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?a=1&mainone=1. Lots of good info for musicians.

Tell them not to sign anything unless a lawyer reviews it. The history of the music industry is replete with bands signing contracts and getting screwed over.

I would direct any band that is thinking of signing a record contract to read the followin article from famed music producer Steve Albini(Nirvana):

The article is very blunt but the guy knows what he is talking about.

The best thing to do is get a lawyer. The music business is plagued with people trying to rip musicians off. If they ask for money, tell your friends to run for the hills.


If it is legit. This company should have something in writing for them to look over, but a lawyer will understand it better. Whatever they do, they shouldn't give away thier publishing. I put it in bold because it's the most important thing to look for in a contract. Musicians want to keep as much of thier publishing as possible.
