I'm just curious. I've never been able to really see how many book signings the average author makes on his/her promotional "tour."

Does anyone have an estimate, or at least a recommendation, on how many cities to visit or what venues to attend?

There are really two answers for this...First, as many book signings as you can do is a good answer, but more importantly (and second) is as many as you can do and still keep it cost-effective. For many writers, launching on a promotional book tour using your own money is like throwing it into a black hole. Sure, you sell a few books, but by the time you figure in hotels, gas, food, etc, you've spent all you earned and then some. I'm trying not to do many overnight stays for this book tour, and I've only got about a dozen signings lined up. When you have a larger publisher that pays for such things, then you can tour until your heart's content. Hope that helps.
