There are tributes and pictures linked from the article here.

The snooker players of the 1970s and 1980s were a big part of my childhood. It was very sad to hear of Alex Higgins' deteriorating health over the years, and I always hoped it would all turn around for him. Rest in peace, Alex Higgins. You are missed.

I cried laughing when I heard he'd said of Bestie, "What a waste...He shoulda stuck to the Guinness like I told him."

From today's Guardian:

Alex Higgins was something of a hero until I made my first visit to the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield many years ago and was told a story about him inviting out a sponsorship girl. When she said no he allegedly head-butted her, which was not exactly sporting.
Who says romance is dead?

Yeah but he wouldn't have been half so much fun to watch otherwise...

He was the reason I got into watching snooker. Poor old Alex.
I'd love to see Steve Davis headbutt an official.
I saw him play a charity gig - tricks and stuff - pissed as a fart. He was actually pretty funny.
