My characters just broke into one of those. I was wondering if anyone might know what kind of equipment, tools, etc. might be found in such an observatory. It's intended for looking at the stars, so there's a telescope and some drawing materials, but I'm at a loss as to what else might be there, and I want the place to seem authentic.

Time period - anything from medieval to Renaissance. I'm flexible.

Thanks very much in advance!

Considering the telescope wasn't invented until the high Renaissance, your medieval characters would see only an astrolabe and other non-optical gear.

Oh, thanks! I can have a calender, a three-dimensional model of the universe and couple of specialized clocks. :)

Would they have a dedicated observatory building even?

My fantasies tend to be a bit... modern... when it comes to science.

Plus, the main purpose of the observatory was to give my characters a quiet moment/breathing space where they deciphered the latest plot development and made out.

Writing 'stuff'? A record of what was seen and when, what the weather was like?

And livestock - rats and mice and cockroaches ...

your astronomer would probably have all the drafting tools available, including the t square. the triangle, the compass, and the divider. Also keep in mind that in the middle ages the sciences were not well divided, so your astronomer is also likely to be an alchemist, physician, and magician, so he could have all the various paraphenalia of those professions about.
