Fortunately, Independence Day (and Canada Day!) are at the start of this month...leaves plenty of time after to get some writing goals accomplished (we hope). So, what are yours for the month of July?

Mine:
1. Edit 25K words on my novella "Seeker"
2. 10K new words on my Aston novel tentatively titled Death Brings the Victory
3. Submit The Cure off to beta readers
4. Submit 2 stories to magazines/anthologies

My WIP (memoir) is at 12K. My goal this month is to get it up to 50.

I'd like to have a fair query letter this week or next.

I'd like to start querying by the end of July.

Good luck to everyone this month. If ya need a kick in the butt ya know where to find me :D

I needed this thread, so thanks.

Goal (which I never make because I'm afraid of failure, or so says my internal therapist):

1. Move my WIP from 18,500 words to a minimum of 50,000. As in, keep working on it. As in, don't save all my hard work to a thumb drive and ignore it, no matter how riddled with self-doubt I become.

That's it.

This month, I'll have to be more modest:

1. Finish Chapter 2 of my novel
2. Finish the new story I started up last month.

Tis all.

1. Release Sanity Juxtaposed as an eBook

Yes, that’s right. I want the whole thing done and released at least as an eBook by the end of this month. That means: cover finished, forewords written, pages put together, and eBook compiled and loaded onto Smashwords. And just maybe, it will be ready to be bought as a POD paperback as well on lulu.com.
2. Finish ‘dress rehearsal’ copy of The Red Pen

With most of the pieces finalised and ready to print, I’d like to tie up the loose ends and get a finished version together ready to launch in early August. That means finalising the unfinished pieces, writing a short editorial, getting together the cover, laying it out, putting it together and printing out a dummy version – as well as work on the website and get a launch date and venue.
3. Continue refining Somewhere to Pray, my Chinese Whisperings short story

Refining and editing this piece is an ongoing task and so I will doing a lot of it this month, working with editor Jodi Cleghorn to make it the best story it can be.
4. Write 2,000 words toward All Fascists are Zombies! and come up with a new title

This is pretty self-explanatory but I really need to keep plugging away with this. It might require me bringing my Mac to work as well. And the title has been bugging me for ages.
5. Edit Playing with the Big Boys (formerly Abused Mind), add new ending and post it on critique group for feedback

After rewriting the ending, I came up with a new and improved one. I need to add that in before offering it up to a horror crit group to be torn into so I can get this to a publishable level.
6. Revise Evicted and resubmit

I received a rejection from EveryDayFiction.com a few weeks ago and there were some glimpses to how to improve it along with a generally more objective view of it due to it being out there for so long.
7. Write a new short story or rewrite an older one

Writing a complete, brand new, first draft of a short story in two days was really fulfilling and something I haven’t done for a while. I want to do it again or at least in a few sittings, if not one.
8. Perform a new poem at a new venue

Open mic poetry has been inspiring me to write new poetry. I have a poem brewing that I need to go get out. I’m also looking for new open mic venues to try and have a few in mind.
9. Organise paperwork, books and journals and clean desk

This might seem like not much of a goal but my paperwork, organising personal/financial documents, political documents and writing paperwork are disorganised and all of my writing journals and magazines are all over the place so I need to get this all together. It also provides a good chance to procrastinate i.e. think.
10. Finish Princesses and Pornstars (Political Research Goal)

I need to finish this book. It fits in with an idea for an old short story to be rewritten about sexism from the first person perspective of a woman.
11. Finish Let the Right One In (Cultural Goal)

I’ve neglected this novel in the interests of reading short fiction, but it’s really good and I’m enjoying reading it when I can but I’ve been taking too long so I need to get it out of the way. It’s horror too which will be good inspiration.
12. Launch alternate theme for the blog (Blogging Goal)

I’ve been meaning to work on an alternate theme for this blog to give readers the option of reading my posts in black text on a white background. WordPress 3.0 was launched last month with a really good default theme that’s going to be the basis of the new theme once I make some tweaks and add in the plugins etc.

Just finished 473 pages of semi-final editing on the SF book for Enage Books.

I'm 49,000 words into my new SF YA distopian, and trying to keep up the pace.

I'm still openly promoting Gate Walker, which has done so well as an e-book in the YA paranormal category, that I'm thinking about a series. I was actually asked if I was doing one. All reviews have been four and five stars. It has held 3rd position for highest rated novel at Fictionwise for five months now, out of 178 publisher titles. I'm just jazzed that my first YA, ever, has been recieved so well. The sales have beaten all my print titles, which is unbelievable to me. Go Gate Walker, go!

LBF lost my contract, so I had to copy my hardcopy edition and send that off to verify that I was indeed one of their up-coming authors. I will be assigned an editor now--at long last.

I'm out on major sub to seven NYC publishers at the moment, and have been out there for only 35 days. So, I'm still waiting for news there. This new agent has taken on another three of my books, and she's anxious to get them all in the pipeline.

Planet Janitor--Custodian of the Stars, failed the test with Electronic Arts, as far as a game version. But Black Castle is interested...so we'll see where this leads. PJ will be a Xmas release, or a little before.

I usually have 1/2 an idea of what I'm planning for our monthly goals, but actually this month...not so much.

I read others' goals and I think it's interesting that the pendulum swings wildly from bsolah's always mind blowing list to MissMachiatto "continue with my novel." No judgment on either. Whatever works. :) Since my own ambitions have been sadly lackluster of late, I think this month they need to be attainable, but more specific:

1. 5,000 on new WIP
2. Research WIP
3. Identify and request specific articles from newspaper archives
4. Start website for book coming out in November

Hi, Tri. Good luck with those publishers. This is a very exciting time for you.

Good luck to everyone with your goals. Thanks, Aston, as always.

1. Learn the true reason why agents are not willing to take a single look at my manuscript, but sending form rejects while regarding all my beta readers and author friends there is not a single problem with the MS or with the query, but they're fascinated by the story itself... One of the sides is wrong. The question, which one?

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem if the MS and the query has no problems?

2. Finish Chapter 2 in my detective WIP.

Slowly making progress with the eBook. The final master copy is with proof readers at the moment
Making slow progress on this too. Still waiting to finalise some pieces and decide on the cover.
This is being done much slower than I would've liked.
Done no work on the novella
Added the new ending and am going to begin doing mark ups this week
Done
Got my idea but haven't found the time to write it
Written a new poem, done it at a new venue. May do the revised version at another new venue I debuted at this month with some old stuff
Desk is clean, so are books. Yet to do anything with journals and magazines.
Reading has been derailed to read another book urgently for secret project.
See above
Haven't touched this...

Hmm. Didn't post in this thread. Weird.

Oh well. I did kinda have a mental breakdown of sorts, so I can be forgiven.

Anyway. Plus One and The Devil You Know are both on sub. I finished my vampire novella and have started editing it. I want to get that on sub by the end of the month and in August I'll work on getting into a regular routine.

So good luck to everyone and I'll join you again properly for the August thread in a couple of weeks.

Fantastic as far as my freelancing gig I just started. Sent off three articles to DS, got one approaved, another for final edit, and the last for major edit. I should be good to go hell's bells in about two days after the trio is approved and marked for payment.

I'm leaving the novel road behind for now--my agent has five books to sub, and she loves them all. Right now money is essential to keep me and the internet alive. I won't be hitting my in-box so much anymore. All of it's in the hands of the great editor in sky. It's been a hell of a five-year run at fiction and AW. I'll still be around, only not as much as before.

I've been a bit AWOL but here were my July results

Release Sanity Juxtaposed as an eBook – I worked a lot on Sanity Juxtaposed in July but didn’t get the eBook released. It is almost ready to go once the proof reading comes back and I do the conversion. This is all largely out of my control.

Finish ‘dress rehearsal’ copy of The Red Pen – Finalising The Red Pen has also been largely out of my control but we made good progress on it this month and am nearing completion hopefully for a late August/early September launch.

Continue refining Somewhere to Pray, my Chinese Whisperings short story – This has been the main goal in the later half of July, refining the story as it needs to be finalised by early August. I’ve done a lot of rewriting.

Write 2,000 words toward All Fascists are Zombies! and come up with a new title – I didn’t even get to think about the novella this month, but did come up with a new title – Dead in the Head.

Edit Playing with the Big Boys (formerly Abused Mind), add new ending and post it on critique group for feedback – I finished editing it and added the new ending but it’s still not in a condition that I’m ready to post it on the critique group.

Revise Evicted and resubmit – This was a pretty simple and easy goal, mainly because it was out in submission land for a while which forced me to gain some distance from it.

Write a new short story or rewrite an older one – I had a few ideas but never got a chance to work on them.

Perform a new poem at a new venue – I wrote two new poems, both of which I performed at Littlefoot slam. I also read an older poem at another new venue, The Spinning Room.

Organise paperwork, books and journals and clean desk – Organising my books, paper and cleaning the desk were all done pretty early on but I never got to find something to organise my journals and magazines in.
Finish Princesses and Pornstars (Political Research Goal) – I’m afraid my reading for this month got derailed for much more important reading so this was neglected. I started reading China Mieville’s The City and The City in preparation for an interview with him in September.

Finish Let the Right One In (Cultural Goal) – I did get a little chunk of this read, but as above, it’s been put aside.

Launch alternate theme for the blog (Blogging Goal) – The bare bones of the alternate theme are there but I never really gave myself some time to look at it.
