I started out to write a novel about a period and area of history I could not find in any fiction work - other than "Romona" that is.

After lots and lots and lots of research, I've ended up with a Trilogy!

The first is The Carpenter and The Sailor - at 96k words - starts in 1769 when the Jesuits are forced to leave The Californias to be replaced by Father Serra leading the Franciscans.

The second is The Mission Trail 106k words - takes up with the founding of Mission San Diego and ends in 1784 when Father Serra dies at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo

The third will be Father Serra's Legacy who knows how many words? - start with Father Serra's death and continue until all 21 missions are completed or when Mexico wins its independence from Spain.

I think the research is as fun as actually writing. I grew up in Southern California and, while I thought I had learned about its history, I now know how little I really knew. And how much of that history is slanted and biased.
