Military and security experts -- watchman hears a noise

Hi, gang. Here's the situation:

We're in primitive times, and there is no electronic communication between watchmen. The Palace, for various reasons, is located on the very border of the land. It's night time, and one of the Palace Guards on watch hears movement and voices at a distance -- and there is no legitimate reason for anyone to be out there, AND some as-yet-unidentified party recently ambushed and killed two Palace Guards. Does the Guard on watch go out there and investigate, leaving his post momentarily unguarded? Or does he stick at his post no matter what?

The thing is, I'm trying to figure out how a detainee can escape through a Palace window when the Palace perimeter should have been guarded. (The King ordered the detainee to be transferred from the dungeon to the nice room with the window in a moment of weakness.)

Thanks for your expertise. I love thinking about these things, but dang I'm iggerant.

Watchman should have some protocol for alerting the two on either side of him before he leaves his post. Low-tech devices like bell pulls, whistles and yelling have all been used.

Guards don't leave their posts without notice. That's why they are called 'guards'. Or if you prefer 'watchmen'.

So yeah, you would need to have your post covered if you were going to leave it for any purpose - from investigating a noise to taking a leak.

If he doesnt have a silent form of communications - some form of bell-pull or semaphore device, and he suspects someone is out there - he would normally call a challenge. "HALT WHO GOES THERE?" - this lets the people know they've been spotted, and probably alerts nearby sentries that he has spotted something. If he suspects something dangerously imminent then he would raise the hue and cry - sounding some sort of alarm.

All of the above, plus a tactical team on call to actually go out and investigate, bristling with armament.

Ring a bell, blow a whistle to summon the back-up team who are sitting in the guardroom - do not leave your post if you don't want to be flogged.

A guard worth his wages wouldn't leave his post while on duty.

As for what they would do, they would notify the other guards and someone would be sent to investigate.

How they'd to this would vary. They would use bells, horns or lanterns.

if the lantern is shaded they would open one side facing the other guards to tell them something was up, leaving the people the saw unaware.

They might also challenge them as has been said up thread.
