Obviously she doesn't live where I live, where there is frequently somebody's mutt barking its stupid head off. My neighbour used to have two dogs in the yard that barked at passing horses. Our gardens back onto the local riding stable's paddock...

I shall look out for this though (I wonder if it's on tv tropes yet?)

No dogs- but I have coyotes yipping in my one book- does that count?

Wow. What a weird thing to rant about. And get paid for it, too! Maybe I should be submitting my random blog rants for payment from Slate, too.

Hm, well there is always a dog barking in my apartment building. It's just background noise at this point: louder than the traffic or wind and more noticeable than the constant humming of an air conditioner.

I have a couple of hell-hounds howling in one book, but that's it. Good enough?

Some neighborhood dogs bark in my novel when my protagonist slams his best friend against a chain link fence while confronting him about cheating on the protag's sister. They're barking because of the noise. Rattle a chain link in any neighborhood with dogs and they'll bark.

Any other dogs barking in the book are identifiable "characters."

Never noticed it in anyone's writing. As in, it doesn't jump out at me.

There are no dogs barking in my stories. Not even in the distance. Do I get a gold star?
