Lesbian and Bi women's anthems

So I write for a queer blog, and one of my colleagues has done two posts on "Coming Out Songs, " and one on "Queer Anthems."

All the songs are about and by guys. Which is all well and good -- but you know, I'd kind of like to have women represented too. So I started thinking about it, about what songs women think of, and why, and then I emailed a few queer women and we started making a list. What I said, is, I'm not defining "anthem," or "lesbian," I'll let you decide what a song means to /for you.

They sent me song lists, and some of them sent links to particular YouTube videos and comments about why they thought these were about /for women. And some talked about how a particular song helped shape them, and made them feel they weren't the only woman to love other women. And a lot talked about how a particular song just meant the world to them in high school or the early stages of coming out.

So I'm going to post the list of songs that got more than two mentions, and I'd love to have comments, or additions, or well, just about anything. I am going to write about this, but I won't quote anyone by name without permission and I'm more than happy do do a link back if you want.

Brandi Carlisle "The Story"

It's deeply interesting to me that men feel utterly compelled to post on the thread, regardless of the fact that it's lesbian-specific.

Huh.

Srsl though, my ex's friends were mostly lesbians, so I remember a lot of the music. Hiss two best friends were D.J.s at the Pyramid club.

I forget a lot of it, but I remember the music. We had fun

I know I'm an outsider here :D, but can I nominate any version of this?

I like the one with Roy, but the audience stands and applauds twice in this version

Um . . . Wayne? Realizing that you really don't have the cojones, so's to speak, to be a lesbian, what about this song, sung by anyone (yeah I know k.d. identifies as lesbian) makes you think of it as lesbian?

I'm not trying to trample you, but I'm awfully curious.

Crying

Roy Orbison said:
I was all right for a while
I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say, "Hello"
Oh, you wished me well
You couldn't tell
That I'd been crying over you
Crying over you
When you said, "So long"
Left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying
Crying, crying
. . .

I just thought it was more an anthem than Constant Cravings is all.

Why would I feel trampled? The question is about music really, so I thought I had something to contribute. Don't any of you remember any straight anthems?

Are there straight anthems?

I just thought it was more an anthem than Constant Cravings is all.

Well, now, see, that's really interesting. Let's take a look at k. d. Lang's Constant Cravings":
Even through the darkest phase
Be it thick or thin
Always someone marches brave
Here beneath my skin

Constant craving
Has always been

Maybe a great magnet pulls
All souls towards truth
Or maybe it is life itself
That feeds wisdom
To its youth

Constant craving
Has always been
So what are we finding in common with these songs--why do so many out n' proud lesbian women identify with "Constant Craving"? And yeah, that's a good question to ask about any number of the songs on that list.

Why does anyone identify with a song? Be cause of how it makes you feel. I remember her hitting with Crying twice in the same year--solo and duet--and the reaction to it. I remember Constant Cravings being a dance song in clubs.

I have no idea. It was when I was selling liquor with my friend Tommy O'Hara. I had a stroke in 2001 so my memory is kaput

ETA: I can tell you only what i saw, but with Constant Cravings there wasn't a sentimental attachment for the older lesbians because it was mainstream. Mainstream didn't accept them so they didn't accept mainstream. The younger ones lust liked the song. It's a great song,

If you want an outsider's opinion, I thought it was less political than all that. I thought they were upset that they were losing her to mainstream.

They're not gay-specific, and Annie Lennox is supposedly straight, but:

Eurythmics: When Tommorrow Comes, Here Comes the Rain Again

They always gave me that vibe in a way that similar songs didn't, but I always assumed I was just projecting my feelings onto songs that weren't about me. And they probably still aren't, but I didn't know until recently what Annie Lennox looked like or that she's considered a "gay icon." So maybe it's not just me.

EDIT:
Oh, it's a bit early, but Jennifer Knapp (interpreted as contemporary Christian, just came out of the closet after haitus) and Chely Wright (country, just came out of the closet after hiatus) are both apparently going to start performing again, I've heard. Considering the genres they're in, I imagine they'll produce an anthem or two that could reach people who don't normally hear songs like that. (Especially in the case of Jennifer Knapp, even though next album won't be marketed as contemporary Christian.)

"I'm the Only One" by Melissa Etheridge. It's not a happy song but a very passionate one.

One of the things that decided me to write about this was two women specifically talking about how much it meant to them that Knapp decided to come back to performing.

And that led to a discussion of songs and what they meant--especially to young women just figuring out that they really didn't want to date the boy next door.

There are a LOT of Ani songs that come to mind. I listened to her music obsessively for years and went to loads of her concerts before there was even an inkling in my mind that i was gay. I'm a little slow, I guess. Anyways:

Face Up and Sing:
somebody do something
anything soon
I know I can`t be the only
whatever I am in the room
so why am I so lonely?
why am I so tired?
I need company
I need backup
I need to be inspired

In or Out:

somedays the line I walk
turns out to be straight
other days the line tends to
deviate
I've got no criteria for sex or race
I just want to hear your voice
I just want to see your face...

I just want to show you
the way that I feel
and when I get tired
you can take the wheel
to me what's more important
is the person that I bring
not just getting to the same restaraunt
and eating the same thing

"In or Out" is basically the theme song of bisexuality. I somehow felt it applied to me although I identified as straight. Funny...

"Pick Yer Nose"

I think shy is boring
I think depressed is too
I think pretty is nice
but I'd rather see something new
all these plastic people
got their plastic surgery
but we got a big big beautiful
we got it for free
who you gonna be
if you can't be yourself
you can't get it from t.v.
you can't force it on
anybody else

Joyful Girl:

i do it for the joy it brings
because i'm a joyful girl
because the world owes me nothing
and we owe each other the world
i do it because it's the least i can do
i do it because i learned it from you
i do it just because i want to
because I want to

everything i do is judged
and they mostly get it wrong
but oh well
'cuz the bathroom mirror has not budged
and the woman who lives there can tell
the truth from the stuff that they say
and she looks me in the eye
and says would you prefer the easy way?
no, well o.k. then
don't cry

There are more but I must run for now!

I'll go try listening to Ani again.

Her voice sorta bothers me--but thanks much for the suggestions.
