Hi kids! I've lived in the NJ, CT area my entire life, and I will soon move to SC. I don't expect a whole lot to be different because I'm going from one suburban area to another, yet I've been warned about culture shock.

Can you give me any advice? I like to be prepared.

Northeast = Fast and angry

South = Slow and friendly

I've come to expect speedy people - drivers, waiters, employees. I can tolerate a little abruptness/discourtesy if you are moving at the right pace. There's no amount of Southern charm that can make up for being slow.

GL to you! My plans for moving south fell apart when none of my leads panned out. Be sure to give NJ the finger on your way out!

The food's actually better than what you've been led to believe.

The food is INCREDIBLE. Smothered, covered...yum. Oh lordy, I've got a severe hankering for some smothered and covered hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, and anything else deep-fried I can get my hands on.

*goes to raid kitchen*

Expect more courtesy. Southern charm and hospitality isn't a myth; you'll most likely find that us southern folk are very friendly. And as for all the stupid southern stereotypes, leave them at the door or face the dixie wrath.

That was awesome. I'll have to stop using barbeque as a verb!
You don't serve burgers and dogs at a barbecue.

But good luck finding white hot dogs and sweet corn this summer :D

Oh, and accents of course. That will probably take some getting used to :p I for one don't have much of a southern drawl, but when I spoke to some guy over the phone once who lived up north he thought I sounded really country. He thought it was cute, but I disagreed entirely :p
