Good news comes by phone. Bad news comes in the mail.

I got an email from the Apple Store.

True, true.

That's why every day when I wake up I check my e-mail, and if there's no post from the agent-I-like-who's-reading-my-stuff-right-now, I heave a sigh of relief, not disappointment. (Of course this sitting by the phone all day is another circle of hell, but that's another thread.)

Sorry, Joe. I applied for a Genius position there and got shot down...at least you can apply again in a year. Actually, you can do that with querying too a lot of the time...

Querying feels like a cross between job hunting and Internet dating. You're trying to sell yourself, but you're also trying to find a compatible relationship based on research. It's odd. And I haven't even gotten to the real "dating" part yet.

Take some comfort from the following:

The first time I applied, by invitation when the stores were brand new:

I got a rejection email.

Written for and about another applicant; they had no record of my interview, my application, or the follow-up interview.

Apple hired an HR company to do all the hiring, and it was a disaster.
