View Full Version : Contract questions

Just got an offer today from an agent, and they sent over the contract! Boo-yah!

But as I'm looking at the contract, is there anything that I should be looking for as standard? Is there anything that might raise a red flag?

Read it like a pessimist. If anything looks weird, just using your commonsense, bring it up to the agent.

Congrats on the offer! First red flag: if you can't understand it. It should be written simply and clearly, and not in language that would require you to hire a lawyer to translate.

There is a wealth of info out there on agent-author contracts. Do some research. A good place to start is here (http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/information-center/), at SFWA. They have a sample contract there that explains the clauses and what you should be aware of.

Wow, congrats on the offer!

A few years ago, Kristin Nelson wrote a ten-part overview of the agent/author contract. (Pub Rants: Agency Agreements (http://pubrants.blogspot.com/search/label/agency%20agreements)) Scroll down the page a bit and you'll find it there. Hope this helps!
