As the line goes, I couldn't make this stuff up.

The news story is mostly just weird and sad, but the last line blows me away: Relatives had treated the mummified infant as a family member, giving it cards during holidays and a dried fish as a pet.

that is a bit weird but I don't quite get why the family couldn't keep it. I am sure there is a good reason. I just don't know it.

Many ancient cultures did similar things to this. Mummies were seen as a way to speak to those that went before. Offerings of food was laid out for them. I believe that is where Mexico's Day of the Dead comes from, though I could be wrong.
