I was surprised to not see a thread about this already.

The Los Angeles Police Department went on tactical alert during the event and took responsibility for escorting the white supremacists to and from the demonstration site. Earlier in the week the group had obtained a permit for the demonstration.
<!-- sphereit end -->
At the end of the rally, after 2:30 p.m., police escorted the white supremacists to the criminal courts building parking lot to get in their vehicles. However, one car failed to start. A crowd of counter-demonstrators ran to the lot and began hurling rocks and bottles into the parking lot's southwest corner, hitting cars and shattering glass. As some of the white supremacists held shields emblazoned with swastikas over their heads to protect them from the projectiles, others attempted to jump-start the car.
The LAPD then order the crowd to disperse and reopened the streets.
Commander David Doan said the LAPD's goal was to ensure that everyone was allowed to exercise free speech while avoiding any use of force by officers. “There was a tremendous amount of restraint shown by our officers,” he said. “We allowed both sides to exercise their 1st Amendment rights.”

I, as any other sane person born after the 1940's, do not support the neo-nazis but I think the actions of the counterprotesters were a bigger victory the neo-nazis could even have thought. Now they are victims and the others are shown as the savages. Please remember, whenever you act as a savage, the nazis win.

I agree, the fact that they're intolerant assholes doesn't gives the counterprotesters a right to attack them physically. You don't fight neanderthals by throwing sticks and stones at them: you're supposed to be better than that.

What you resist, you become.

Yeah, just like when Gandhi led India into invading and oppressing another country....

Or how about that time where all the black people in the United States became bigots and passed reverse Jim Crow laws?

That's why the only way to stop any evil in the world is to lie down infront of it!

Seriously, though, the Nietzsche quote is a lot better.

For one thing, it does not preclude ANY resistance. It simply reminds us to take care that we don't become what we're fighting, which is an actual problem.

Overall, I'd give it a B+ in terms of quotes.

Yeah ,its a strange one.
I'm very much against violence as a means of persuasion, but I've learned one possible truth.
Bullies only respond to aggression. be it direct or indirect. appealing to their 'higher selves' is pointless.

Nietzsche was mad of course...

:D

EDIT: But yeah, bearing in mind that very thing.
In fact another thread mentions the very master of warnings - Orwell

But doesn't it end up scalating? I mean, an eye for an eye and everyone will be blind...

That's why you should take care.

Its all about the middle of the ground. Don't be a spineless wimp, but know when to stop fighting.

<shrugs> Its a bit tricky, but its better than slipping to either extreme.

It won't come to that.
Point i'm making is respond with aggression, the bully will back down, time and time again.
appeal to their 'higher self' and only when they tire hitting you, will they stop.
Surely Latin America has enough experience of that? (amongst many other places of course)

Agorism FTW!
Um, you can't really respond with an aggressive act, can you? Wouldn't that be a defensive act? Of course, some defensive acts involve force. :D

Nothing offensive, just referring to LAmer's tragic history of the last 45/50 years.

It's far longer than that and the lesson always seems to be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss", personally.

Kansas! Again.
The counter-protesters took it way too far.
