Hi. I'm new, so apologies if I've somehow missed the Writing Competitions forum.
I've just watched a video interview which Julie Myerson gave to the Writers & Artists Yearbook website. About halfway through, in answer to the question "What was your lucky break?" (time index 2:29) she replies that it was winning a competition with an extract from the novel she was writing at the time, mention of which in her covering letter to an agent got her noticed.
Now, I was aware that being able to include any competition wins, or other media coverage or achievements, in one's submission was useful in this regard, but I was not aware that there were writing competitions that accepted extracts from novels. Every competition I've seen wants a complete piece of work, whether that be poetry or short fiction.
I have two novels under way. One which is on the back-burner while I get the other finished, but both are at about the 50/60% mark. In other words, they contain reams of good extracts!
Where might I find this kind of competition?
Cheers
