What, in your opinion, are some of the most overdone plots in fiction? Something where from the first chapter you're going, "Oh yeah. Know this story line. Now let's see if it surprises me." And it doesn't.

This might be a good thing for those of us tossing about story skeletons and trying to keep them fresh and new.

The search for the ___________ (sword, ring, golden fleece) that will enable to hero to save his __________ (kingdom, village, planet) and obtain the hand of the beautiful princess.

All of them,. but I don't really care. I don't read for plot, I read for story.

Haha! I can relate! Yes, I know the hero/quest thing has been told a million times but if the writing is good and the story is great, I'll keep reading them. I also think the "Dark Lord" thing has been beaten to death but I wish I had been the one to invent it!
