Jane McGonigal (http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html ?awesm=on.ted.com_8DMI&utm_campaign=jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_bett er_world&utm_medium=on.ted.com-twitter&utm_source=direct-on.ted.com&utm_content=ted.com-talkpage), she's one of those scientists optimistic about gaming.
As far as I can tell, she things games will be useful as a sort of motivational cure-all.

Some stuff from the vid:
Estimated combined total time of all players spent in WoW: 5.93 million years, not too bad, only a little over 4,520 hours for each player. Which is only around half a year of total playing time, little less actually.

Also, people can expect to spend about 10K hours gaming by age 21.

Four things gamers are getting good at:
Urgent Optimism (Not so sure about this one, at least for myself.)
Social Fabric (Yes to this one.)
Blissful Productivity (/signed)
Epic Meaning (I understand it.)
=Super-Empowered Hopeful Individuals (Maybe.)
