When writing "The Official History of X Corporation," to eventually be vetted by X Corporation, how do you make the story funny, interesting, dramatic, filled with highs and lows and struggles to the death, instead of a series of sound bites from the top executives?

Primary sources. Get your hands on as many of them as you can. If people who were there are available, interview them. Get them to tell stories. There will surely be at least one great storyteller among them. Turn on the recorder and let him ramble.

This, of course, will be more challenging if everyone's dead. David McCullough does a good job of making history interesting. If I didn't know better I'd think he actually had interviewed John Adams and George Washington.
