Between the Publisher and the Distributor

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, so mods please move if it isn't

What comes between the publisher and the distributor? I mean, the publisher publishes the books, right, and teh distributor well...distributes them. But who actually places them in stores?

Do publishers have sales reps who do that? or is there an independant body who do it?

I just realised today that I have no idea about this step.,

Generally there's not a step between a publisher and a distributor (if the dis. carries the pub's full line).

Publishers DO have field sales reps who sell to the bookstores. And buy lunch. And drinks.
