They sure as hell don't work when the train is underground. I'm not sure exactly where the Northern goes underground. I believe Hendon Central is overground, but the furthest I've been up that line is Chalk Farm.

OK further research indicates that it goes underground between Golders Green and Hampstead

Yes. But there are areas where high concrete levels restrict signal.

You will be able to use it for a good part of the way, but not all the way

A quick check on google maps shows that the northern line is overground between hendon central and golders green. After that youre under hampstead heath - not much of a signal available there.

As of 2009 mobiles don't work on the underground parts of the tube and it's very unlikely that TFL will stump up to have tube trains fitted with those mobile phone connections like planes.
