...rejection is amazingly helpful.

Writers are horrid, stinky creatures. Every day hunched over their keyboards, pecking out their inanities with their dirty fingers, messing clean white pages with their putrid fantasies, ever so eager to inflict them on decent, God fearin folk. I thank the Lord for our guardians, those tireless agents, those selfless editors! I pray for them; yea, I pray for an eternal abundance of rejection letters!

Hmph. Not so helpful at all. Maybe if he didn't sound so pompous, his "helpful advice" would've been what he intended it to be.

I have to admit that when I first read the rejection letter, it hit me as harsh and flatly insulting; however, after reading the author's response, I believe he/she (editor) pegged it right on. Nothing less than harsh realism would have had even the slightest chance of penetrating the personality he/she perceived in the submission. Even with the, uh, less-than-tactful approach, it sounds as though the effort was probably wasted. Cudos to the editor for the effort anyway. I wish some of my rejections had been as candid.

If the guy had 1000 rejections - he deserved every word and I hope, but doubt, that he'll profit by them.

There is a time when a writer must stop and look at his work objectively and realize if it really is crap.

If this person actually wrote the words "a blisteringly stinging social satire; the contemporary social issues of multiculturalism and immigration, relationships, horror career choices, self-acceptance," I'm not surprised at a thousand rejections. That's just bad.

a European phrase?

Sorry to interject here, but in the "additional comments" the Rejection Queen muses that maybe she "Sh*ts them off" because they are bitter and twisted."

I've never heard this before, is this a common idiom? (I know, I'm ignorant)

Just curious, sorry for butting in...

(and I agree...1,000 rejections? that's got to say something to a writer besides "but that's just my style"...but you gotta respect tenacity, I suppose.)

And another thing...I miss Miss Snark...when is she coming back from vacation? lol.

Wow. I didn't read it as pompous in the least-- I read it as an editor who was being reeeeeally helpful to a writer who apparently didn't deserve it. I'm horrified that the writer's rationalization is that these 1,000 editors are all just jealous of her superior talent and that editors are failed writers.

Sheesh.

P.S. I never heard the phrase, either, Ro, and I just discovered Miss Snark the other day... what lousy timing for me!

'over-analystical detail'.
I am personally a big fan of over-analysticallizing things. I think it's fun. Until the spring breaks, and then you have to throw it away.
It's a good thing this girl isn't being taxed on hyphens.
