You can do it while you sit here and read and post. If you don't know how here's a link.

pink ribbon

Guys you can do this too! It's rare for a man to have lumps but it can happen. And you can also grab the one you love and learn how to do a breast exam for them. Just have her lie down or stand in back of her and practice what you've read in the link.

If you suspect anything go to a doctor! Don't try to self diagnose it. My doctor told me that it will feel like a hard pea-like lump that will move around a little. And remember to feel well into the arm pit and where your bra strap lies.

Have fun!

Guys you don't mind if we sit here and feel ourselves up, do you?

Not only good advice, but a terrific subject line. Why am I not surprised?

I was told that it wouldn't be movable, but it could feel that way because of the breast tissue moving around it.

Either way, check! And if there's anything there that shouldn't be, get to the doctor ASAP.

As an aside: if--god forbid--you do find something, prepare to be disgusted and appalled by how long you have to wait for a specialist.

So check regularly. We should all be familiar with our bodies in their normal state--women and men.

ETA: great thread, dork! :D

Quoting for emphasis. A friend of mine didn't find a lump (the tumour was a sneaky 'un), and if she hadn't checked with a doc, I don't want to know what might have happened. :)

Maybe that's why my doc said it would only move a little. You described it better.

Thanks!

I think women with larger breasts would have a harder time feeling a lump, right?

I belong to the IBTC. But the older I get the longer bigger they're getting! It's like puberty in my 40's! :snoopy:

My friend's was hidden behind hard skin, so it was only picked up through a mammogram. In actual fact, the first time she went to the doctor, she was told she just had a "virus".

I belong to the IBTC.

I'm in that same club. :D

But you know what? I check regularly and I still missed one. I think it depends on the density of the tissue. Or maybe I'm just an incompetent boob-checker. :)

ETA: make sure you check up around your armpit, too. They can be sneaky.

ETAx2: I don't like to overshare, but in case it's useful for someone, mine turned out to be just a cyst, and therefore benign.

Good thread terri!

Some women have more fibrous breast tissue so lumps can be harder to feel even if you're smaller chested. If you're in doubt, your doctor can do an exam for you during a regular office visit.

I can't believe the bunneh hasn't jumped in to volunteer his services.

I couldn't feel the lump I had (that was benign). I try to be more thorough now, but I also get mammograms and have my doc do an exam during PAP visits.

Good thread!

Guys should be feeling themselves up as well (as mentioned) but not just above the waist. A regular palpation of the twin residents of the marble sac is necessary to check for lumps or irregularities. Testicular cancer can be dealt with if detected early.

All together now...mash those bulgy, hanging, flopping thangs.

There are also lumps called fibroadenomas. I had one of those. Not cancer. But it had to be diagnosed by a doctor.

I know this tends to be an embarrasing subject for men, but guys check your testicles and if you find something go to the doctor straight away. Trust me, I know from personal experience. Not a pleasant time. The sooner you act the better.

I felt him thumping as I was feeling myself up a while ago. But he'll be in soon enough. He's probably making baby bunnehs.

Okay, but wash your hands before you post! Especially if you're at the library. :tongue

My love bug loves when I give him a thorough examination of the testicular kind. He says mine are lots better than the doctor's who just leaves him hanging *cough*.

Why do I have the feeling I should break out the Rusty Warren records?

And even if you don't feel something, have regular mammograms. My mother had something show up on hers and after the biopsy, found out it was only calcium deposits left over from her breastfeeding days.

Have I ever told you guys my mammogram story? It was my first one and there i was waiting for the nurse in my paper vest anticipating having my boobs squished. This was my first time so I was a bit nervous. One of the aids brought me back to the technician and she wasn't what I expected. I expected nurse Ratchet! This woman didn't have a stitch of makeup on and her face was littered with freckles. Tons of them but they seemed to make her who she was. Her hair was peppered with grays but at one time I could tell that she was one of those red headed, freckled faced kids with piercing green eyes. She had a soft, caring voice and we chatted lightly about this being my first mammo. I knew this had to be her millionth but she treated me as if this was no routine day for her. In my head I named her Mother Earth, because that's what she graced her mannerisms with. She lead me over to the machine and showed me the plates where I was going to be squished. I asked, do you want me to put my breasts up on the plates? "Goodness, no," she said. "I'll do it and we're going to do one at a time. She opened my vest to one side and placed her hand on my boob and gently placed it up on the plate. Her hands were warm and gentle and tissue paper soft. I was in aw of this "Mother Earth" woman. I had never had my boobs so cared for in my life. It was as if they were precious gems. The only other person who cared for my breasts for the last 15 years was my husband and, um, I'll let you use your imagination there. That day I actually fell in love with "Mother Earth" for about an half of an hour. Then I went home to Mr. Rough-n-tumble never telling him about my affair with "Mother Earth."

Nice!

It's impossible to be reminded of this too often.

Guys, you can also inspect your guys. Do this once a month in the shower, while the warm water loosens everything up. My cheerio-sized anomaly turned out to be nothing, but it was a relief to be sure.
