I'm thinking about finding some programing partners and making a simple
to use and easy to install E-Publishing PHP script.

It would let you sell your work yourself using PayPal.

Would anyone want it?

I don't know a thing about how e-publishing works, however, if doing it that way still allowed you to sell on amazon it might work. The thing is, just being able to sell via paypal isn't enough. Writers need coverage and I don't see how that's possible, as an independent, unless you use places like BandN and Amazon.
I could be way off in my assumptions...so take it with a grain of salt.

Maybe I missed something but I don't understand what you mean by an "E-Publishing PHP script" ... ??

Are you talking about selling in ebook format?

Restricting sales to one's own site is pretty much shooting yourself in the foot. Unless you have Godly traffic already, it won't be much help, me-thinks.

Sure; you can use Google Checkout or Paypal, or various sites that specialize in OEM sales for digital stuff--heck look at all the Shareware scripts that do this, and shareware stores.

The real problem is that you're better off selling an ebook through a large site that has millions of visitors, versus a personal site that will have at most thousands per month.

And even that is rare.

I’m a bit confused. So someone buys that software, uses it, and offers their title, even going to the trouble of getting an Amazon page. So what? If what they’re selling isn’t written on a professional level who will want to buy it after reading the excerpt? And if it is written on a professional level why do they have to do it themself?

This seems like a solution in search of a problem.

I guess the short version is: Why does the market need more people who appropriate, rather than earn the title author?

If you think you can do it better then go for it. Like others already said there is a lot of shareware and other options out there. I haven't investigated this particular script but I would be surprised if nothing exists.

Scribd.com probably obviates the need. Dunno how PHP script would help particularly (I am skeptical that decent layout, let alone editing and proofreading, can be automated), but the sales part scribd.com has covered.
