Happy New Year everybody!!! This is my first year celebrating Chinese New Year in China with any kind of long-term memory capability. It's pretty cool. There have been firecrackers and fireworks going off continuously for about 7 hours now. We don't play around when it comes to scaring demons away and showing off our inventions. The sky is a weird glowing color b'c there is so much gunpowder in the air. It's aromatic like barbecue.

Today I went to my relatives' house and had a really awkward time. I finally feel like an American, since on Thanksgiving in the states, I didn't really have any relatives to feel awkward around.

Anyways.

Gong Xi Fa Cai or Gong hoy fat choy if you're from the south, and if you're from neither, then Good luck and get rich!

i love how the explosions across the city are setting off car alarms, it's a musical, really. A shanghaisical.

/end sarcasm

seriously though. It's so freaking cool here, it's like a flash mob, but w/ explosives.

oh man, I went on the roof at 11:50, and it was crazy. Popping all around, everywhere was fireworks. People were lighting it up ten feet away from the building, I freaked out and thought I might get hit for a minute there. There were so many fireworks that there was smoke all around, which made it feel like the city was closing in in lights. Then it started SNOWING. Seriously. At first i thought it was raining ash, but it was snow b'c I tasted it. Now it's died down to just a smattering of booms randomly, but for a while there I was going deaf, even though I had my MP3 on.

I don't know if i'll still be in China next February, but this was a night I won't forget. I felt like a little kid again.

Gung hay fat choy! Half Chinese here--my dad's family is from Hong Kong, although I personally don't speak Cantonese. Since it's still the 13th here in WA State, my family isn't having a celebration until tomorrow. And of course, I'm expecting to get more $$$$$.

Happy New Year! And, I have to say, I like the tiger best out of all the animals for a new year. So much cooler than rats or pigs. :)

Hope there were lots of red envelopes involved! :D

Today I had a nice lunch at home with most of my family. My dad made eggrolls, chow mein, chicken spread, and some other things. I got one lucky money envelope from my dad and one from my grandma. And almost everyone, myself included, remembered to wear red. My sister even had my brother-in-law wear a red shirt. Overall, it was pretty nice.

I'm an ox:

and a Libra:

And I think it's fair to say I have a huge chunk of both sets of traits.

Happy Chinese New Year, folks.
