AW. A very nice place!
... never had a problem with them, personally. Most editors think puns are ultra-lame though. So I usually avoid them, except for use as titles, sometimes.

Super Cally Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious.

In the right hands, it can be a true masterpiece.

lost among the words
I used to edit a fanzine, back in the day. Several of the writers liked to put puns in their stories. I told them from the get-go that if you have puns in your story, you've GOT to identify it to me, or I'll correct the spelling/grammatical errors (which I was authorized to do).

They didn't believe me.

The first story came in with no earmarks. I corrected and printed.

Then they believed me.

Can't see how a pun can be funny if it can't always be recognized.

Or is that part of the humor that I just don't get?

A dark, evil place.
Just because a pun elicits a groan rather than a laugh doesn't make it any less funny.

I can't answer, because I'm too busy transporting gulls across state lines for immortal porpoises.

Bada-bing!

I voted "Lesser of two weevils", because I finally recognised a quote!

Also, random anecdote: at the dinner table, in my family, 'punny' conversations go on all the time. It will go like this;

"Can you pass the knife, dear?"
"That was a very pointed remark."
"No need to fly off the handle."
"You're really on edge today..."
"Your comments are very incisive."
"Oh, cut to the chase..."

... while my sister and I kind of gape at each other.

Sounds like dinner with my husband's step father. Punny guy, I'm sure he'd find a way to jack-knife into your family's conversations with a point or two.

Because of his rapier wit, I presume?

You guys are hilarious... I practically cried laughing reading the above posts - so yes, puns ARE funny. (But also cringe-worthy.)

However I think we need to get a handle on the situation...
