So, I have a WIP with Moonbase on it. And no, I don't want to call it Moonbase. I want to name it after one of the astronauts. Or maybe one of the chief engineers.

Can I do this legally? Do I have to get permission from the next-of-kin? I don't want to get sued if this WIP ever gets published.

Thanks in advance.

If you get to the publication stage, I'd get permission from the estate (assuming he's dead) first. Either that, or change the name. It's a quick fix.

I talked to General (Gus) Grissom, one of the original seven astronauts, on the phone a few times while doing some government work. I can only say it was an honor, and the man was a gentleman, through and through.

I'm no expert, but if he's a famous public figure (such as Grissom), and you're just using the name for a clearly-fictional moonbase, I don't see how it would infringe upon Grissom's right of publicity, nor would you be overtly profiting off of his name...
