Yes, snobbish elitism is prevalent in literature, but isn't it just as bad to snub something because it's deemed as a classic and worthy of study? That annoys me far more than elitism because although those people are shutting themselves off from literature that they might actually like, at least they do it out of a passion for studying. What passion is there in shunning books which happen to be critically acclaimed- some of them being the foundations of literature?
