No wonder South Carolina has yet to remove Gov. Mark Sanford from office - if they do, Lt. Gove. Andre Bauer would take his place. He has some history of foot-in-the-mouth disease but his latest remarks hit a new low mark:

Bauer has folks shaking their heads again, after he likened government assistance to the poor to feeding stray animals.

At a town hall meeting Thursday, Bauer, who is running for governor in his own right now that Sanford is term-limited, said: "My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed! You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that."

Wow. I am a ZPG advocate, and THAT kind of talk makes me cringe!

My own ZPG stance is one of voluntary limitation upon one's own reproduction. But this guy is talking about deliberately denying unwilling people any excess food in order to deter their reproduction. If I thought he said that with any degree of intellignce, I'd be scared. But I'm certain he merely said it in a full and glorious measure of bone-headed stupidity, so rather than scared I'm embarassed. What a dooffus!

But sadly there are some people who do think along those lines on a calm and reasoned-through level of intelligence, and who do indeed advocate food deprivation to "undesirable" members of society to keep their numbers at bay. They used to be called Nazis. Today they're called ethnic cleansers, but it's all the same thing.

I think they prefer the term "fiscal conservative" or "Opponets to Big Government."<G>

Want to take a guess on how he feels about health care?
I'm certain he's in favor of health care. Pretty much everybody is, aside from those opposed for religious reasons (i.e. Christian Scientists, etc.).

Jon Stewart had a fun time with this on last night's show. South Carolina gives him a lot of material.

Maryn, who never comes to this board

Or Stalinists (remember the Holodomor?). Or Maoists (remember the Great Leap Forward?)

It's certainly convenient for progressives to forget about the progressives' crimes, or to forget as well that it was the National SOCIALIST party that Hitler headed.

We demand a broad extension of care for the aged.
...
The government must undertake the improvement of public health -- by the greatest possible support for all clubs concerned with the physical education of youth.

Oops. Wrong guy. :D

when I first started to read this post, I wondered if it was just going to be something taken out of context (but that never happens, right?) ...

But this statement is just insensitive, and deliberately so, it would seem.

(I never come over here, either)

A really cool place
Some of the things he's proposing such as drug testing or mandatory attendance at PTA meeting for the parents of kids receiving free lunches sounds great for about two seconds...until you actually think about it.

What happens when the parents don't follow through? Do we then stop feeding their children? There's not much that's more cruel than allowing a child to be hungry b/c...well dem's da rules. What a moron.

Wonder how he'd justify is absolute idiocy if drug tests come back negative and he found out that kids are suffering because of... unemployment...

This guy's a tool. A dumb-ass tool. He should only hope he never has to worry about how his kids are going to eat.

Here's another quote from the speech. Bauer has made the astounding discovery that the schools with the poorest kids have the worst test scores -- and then extrapolates that it's because they are receiving free or lower cost food.
Later in his speech, Bauer said, “I can show you a bar graph where free and reduced lunch has the worst test scores in the state of South Carolina,” adding, “You show me the school that has the highest free and reduced lunch, and I’ll show you the worst test scores, folks. It’s there, period.” … “

Wow. This is the second time in a few weeks I've been confronted with the free and reduced-cost lunch program being presented as some sort of social blight. And it pisses me off.

No hyperbole here, I walked a mile each way to and from school, some mornings with my stomach grinding into my spine because we were down to ketchup and crackers for dinner the night before. Those meals at school kept me healthy. And I can tell you there are many, many reasons for welfare other than drug abuse.

Regardless of whether you think the parents should try harder or get their urine tested and/or their heads examined, can we at least agree that it's okay to feed hungry kids?

Ya know, Don, maybe this is just me, but I think the more important thing was the national part of the national socialist party. I.E: The bugfuck insane "My race is better than your race" hatred that fueled pretty much every single thought behind their action.

For anyone here not familiar with WHY we give kids free school lunches ... it's because UNCLE SAM WANTS OUR KIDS!!! It has nothing to do with being charitable. It's because when WWII was being fought, the high rankig officers were dismayed over the skinny, scrawny, puny American GI's in the ranks. They were 19 year old boys who were underweight, had bad teeth, and weak bones. Those poor lads grew up during the Great Depression with hardly enough food on the table. So after we won the war, it was decided it was the responsibility of the government to ensure a healthier selection of soldiers available for the next big war. Thus free hot school lunches.

I don't think a hungry kid or the parent grateful their kid can eat is gonna care. It isn't like the food is conditional. You get it weather you enlist or not.

Sass- recipient of free hot lunches.
