View Full Version : Unsung modern conveniences

I know that electricity and flight and the blessed, blessed internet are everyday marvels that we all enjoy. And don't even get me started on air-conditioning and mind-boggling medical advancements.

But yesterday I had my garbage disposal replaced. It's been on the fritz since July. I swear, that's got to be one of my favorite appliances. I just flipped the switch and aaaahhhhhhh, dinner scraps disappear like they'll never stink up my garbage can again.

So, what other modern (or even modern-ish) conveniences don't get enough strokes?

My rice cooker.

I can cook just about anything with above-average competence, yet the simple act of cooking perfect rice eluded me for years. The grains wound up too mushy, boiled over, or just plain burned.

Then I discovered the sanity-saving rice cooker. I just throw in the water, rice, and whatever seasoning I'm in the mood for, flick the switch and a few minutes later, spoonful after spoonful of perfectly fluffy rice appears like magic.

There are innumerable things you don't even think about or know about. In many areas, meter readers for electric, water and gas meters don't have to come around and physically read the meters anymore because they have electronics that send radio waves to the utility companies. This may "put people out of a job" the way robots are alleged to do, but it saves the company money and keeps the meter reader from having to go into your yard where your dog Cujo doesn't know him. Maybe that guy can find a better job.

Anti lock brakes are a godsend. There are a lot of people alive today because of them.

There are SO MANY safety things, both automobile-related and elsewhere (such as housing and building related: wiring codes, GFI power outlets, smoke detectors,...) that EACH ONE has saved lives, that just being alive in the modern world is a lot safer than it was 50 or more years ago.

I recall a Mercedes TV ad, it's from way back, either the '70's or '80's, about not enforcing a patent on a safety innovation - I don't see it on Youtube, but it's mentioned in a general blogpost (http://www.allthingsworkplace.com/2009/10/what-cant-you-not-share.html), a Christian website (http://new.actsweb.org/daily.php?id=1651&tpl=daily_html_template.html), and even a site about barbershop quartets (http://74.125.93.132/search?q=cache:RwsdqFTtbBMJ:www.indianheadchorus.o rg/ss/ssoct09.doc+Mercedes+%22too+important+not+to+share&cd=10&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a).

It may not appear very high-tech to some, but the manual, multi-blade disposable hair shaver gets my vote for the moment. The one I use has five (FIVE!) blades that smooths my face to its prepubescent smoothness every time.

It's a far cry from that single-bladed, might-slice-my-throat-open-at-any-moment shaver I was compelled to use in the early days.

Oh my. We compost. What happens to food that goes into a garbage disposal? I've never even thought of that eventuality. Does it just eat it up and send it down the drain?

Garbage cans don't stink if you compost.

I got this question in repland. (-;

The city picks up our compost once a week, with the rest of the recyclables. Every Thursday it magically disappears.

I absolutely adore my Electrolux vacuum cleaner. It's broken now (darn kids!) but I am more than willing to pay the bux it's gonna cost to have it repaired, because it's fantastic.

Also, I love my digital thermostat. That thing is awesome and has saved us mucho deniro over the years we've had it. Can I also nominate the remote control? It was awesome when we finally got one as a kid...I hated always having to be the one to get up and manually change the channels, lol.

I'll vote for microwave ovens.
And remote control. Comcast came and gave us a new remote a few weeks ago and it's still programmed wrong. Must get up to adjust the volume and every other time the TV's turned off the power box also shuts down so must physically get up and turn on the power. Very much a pain.
