I know that electricity and flight and the blessed, blessed internet are everyday marvels that we all enjoy. And don't even get me started on air-conditioning and mind-boggling medical advancements.

But yesterday I had my garbage disposal replaced. It's been on the fritz since July. I swear, that's got to be one of my favorite appliances. I just flipped the switch and aaaahhhhhhh, dinner scraps disappear like they'll never stink up my garbage can again.

So, what other modern (or even modern-ish) conveniences don't get enough strokes?

My rice cooker.

I can cook just about anything with above-average competence, yet the simple act of cooking perfect rice eluded me for years. The grains wound up too mushy, boiled over, or just plain burned.

Then I discovered the sanity-saving rice cooker. I just throw in the water, rice, and whatever seasoning I'm in the mood for, flick the switch and a few minutes later, spoonful after spoonful of perfectly fluffy rice appears like magic.

I have neither a garbage-disposal unit (well I do...it's called THE BIN) or a rice cooker.

What about that dental suction thing. Now you don't have to spit in that little sink every two minutes and watch your own blood swirl down the drain.

Anti lock brakes are a godsend. There are a lot of people alive today because of them.

Anti lock brains would be nice too

My husband. I have the OCD model. My floors are always impeccably clean.

1) Power steering. I went without it the other day. I'd rather not do that again.

2) Tupperware, definitely.

3) Pepperspray.
