I need help with this sentence, punctuation-wise. I don't know where to put a question mark.
(In my story, a psychiatrist is talking to a patient and says):
“Gertrude, can you even say the words aloud? Can you say, ‘I love my son’”
Where does the question mark go?
If I put it like this: "Can you say, ‘I love my son?’”
it sounds as if he's asking her if she can say 'I love my son?"
It doesn't look right to put the question mark anywhere else, and it seems wrong to leave it out completely.
any help is appreciated.
