I need to divide the vast subject of “The Arts” into at preferably 5 (perhaps six) sub-catagories. I realize I could toss this in “ask the experts” but what the hey, why leave my friends? So, would it make sense to divide the main subject ‘the Arts’ into the following:

1. Art (painting drawing etc)
2. Writing
3. Photography
4. Theatre
5. Sculpture.

Does that basically cover it? Or am I really missing something?

thanks =)

Music.

I also think it depends what you mean by 'the Arts'. Because if you're using it in the academic sense then you also need to consider the Humanities etc.

ETA: And perhaps Film should be there? Maybe with theatre.

I reckon Sculpture is really part of the Art (in the sense that it's a similar method of expression, but using different media).

AW. A very nice place!
... would agree with sculpture being under the same category as art. Dance would be under theatre, I'm guessing. Maybe film would be with photography and form a larger category like Celluloid, etc?

Maybe also Design, as in architecture and fashion.

Maybe your categories should encompass more? (Just my two pesos here)

1.) Visual
2.) Performance
3.) Literary
4.) Music
5.) Origami

I just woke up. I might have been pushing it with that last one.

My suggestion would be

1) visual arts--2D (e.g. painting, photography, graphic design, comics)
2) visual arts--3D (e.g. sculpture, architecture, textile arts, fashion, installations)
3) Performance arts (e.g. film, theatre, music--as performed).
4) Text arts (e.g. poetry, scripts, prose--as written)
