View Full Version : AVP3

Aliens is one of the best sci-fi action films ever made.

Predator is one of the best sci-fi action films ever made.

Aliens Versus Predator was one of the worst films of all time.

Many people washed their hands of the AVP concept about then and there, thinking it was a still born abomination...but lots of movie goers are unaware that AVP has long been considered to be one of the two scariest and best games ever made.

Aliens Versus Predator 1 and 2, the video games, were taught, gripping, and FREKKEN TERRIFYING. And more than that, they were true to the feel of both movies. They were actually set in space. They actually had Weyland/Yutani. And more than that, they had the MARINES, the motion trackers, and the plots actually made some goddamn sense!

In AVP 1 and AVP 2 you played as either an alien, predator or marine.

In AVP 2 they upgraded the controls for the alien so that they were less awkward to use, and it was easier to crawl on the walls, floors and ceilings, then drop down behind enemies and bite their heads off or impale them with your tail. Predators, you got the heat vision, the WTF awesome plasma shoulder cannon, and you could cloak and sneak and it was *awesome*.

And they actually made playing as a marine shockingly fun. You've got the constant blip blip blip of the motion tracker in your ears, and you had aaaaall the guns: The Pulse Rifle, the Smartguns, the flamethrower and the shotgun...for close encounters.

And then I saw this trailer on IGN.

Great graphics. Lance Hendrickson. A story that seems to be tried and true AVP fair. And, of course, all the classic sound effects.

And yes, the alien's shrieking noise STILL scares the willies out of me.

Now, if the gameplay holds up and the scares are intense as they were back in the first two, then I'll be real real happy.

Also if it comes out for the PC too...but from my preliminary readings, I believe it will.

EDIT: Its coming out for the PC too.

I actually liked the first AvP movie.
Never played one of the AvP games, can't ever seem to find them.

Nearly banned in Australia, which is usually a sign of quality.

Track em down, LOG.

They are sooo worth it :D

The first game had the best presentation of the Predator idea ever (tho Concrete Jungle did, at the very least, make the playable world seem bigger than ever before), but the execution of the alien as a playable species was meh. I went in circles for half an hour before working out the (too complex to be fun) control on the PC. The marine levels on AVP were amazing, and put rest to any fears that the Marines would be outgunned. If the new game is ten percent as good as the original it'll be worth playing.

I loved the Alien in the original. What was wrong with the controls? As I recall, it was standard FPS mouse+keyboard, with the addition of a button you held to walk on walls - which I think I rebound to the right mouse button - made it very easy. Nothing like dropping on someone from the ceiling and chomping a guy's head off.
And the unlockable stuff in AvP 1 was fun - sniper munch ftw! :D

I'm gonna need a better PC...

The joystick controls were funky. Push forwards and the alien would decide to wiggle side to side. It's been years since I played it, but the controls of the alien stick out in my mind as needing fine-tuning (or I really should have updated my drivers before playing). It was designed for keyboard, but I never play WASD+mouse if I can help it - and the fact that the new game is available on the 360 means I'll probably go for the Achievements.

There's an AVP3 game? Have to tell my guy friends! I've watched countless hours of them going through it, or doing team death-match. One's especially good playing a Predator, another is freaky scary excellent as an Alien.

And whats nice is it comes out a month after Mass Effect 2!

Bioshock 2 is coming out February too, so much stuff, so little money...

I hope Bioshock 2 is as much of an improvement as System Shock 2...but i doubt it.

Basically just showing off some yautja abilities.

I really love the distraction mechanic and how they worked in yet another awesome thing from the movies. I wonder if you can record specific sounds and play them back...

01-31-2010, 02:40 AM
Like recording sounds from outside the game then brining them in.

01-31-2010, 02:43 AM
Like how in the original Predator, the Predator recorded speech and played it back.

First review is in, only got a 5.75.
Here's a scan of the review (http://gamegrep.com/showimage.php?pos=1&newsid=29601). Might want a magnifying glass.

I really enjoyed the demo I played.

Kiande Amedha Gameplay Preview (http://g4tv.com/videos/44028/Aliens-vs-Predator-Alien-Gameplay-Preview/)
Couldn't find the Yautja preview.

The alien seems unusually intelligent in this version, not even a Queen, Empress, or the Queen Mothers have ever shown the ability to operate a computer, let alone a drone.

If anyone wants more detailed info on the species, check out the Yautja Encyclopedia (http://reocities.com/Hollywood/highrise/7256/intro.html) and The Anchorpoint Essays (http://www.anchorpointessays.com/essays.html)

I just saw a commercial for this game that implied there will be online combat. I am very leery.

02-14-2010, 12:43 PM
Um, yeah, the demo is a multiplayer demo.

It was very fun.

Also, AvP is #4 on Steam sales, even though it's not out yet.

Still $50 on Steam. WTH.

ME2 deluxe edition is cheaper than that.
The Dragon Age Deluxe is cheaper.

12-24-2010, 12:52 AM
Got it cheap on steam.
Played a few hours.

I gotta admit, it scares me. But that doesn't mean much because I'm very easily scared.
Tried Marine; chickened out before I even reached the first checkpoint. There was so much darkness, so many places for Xenos to crawl out of and execute kill moves from >.> Logically it shouldn't scare me; even if they kill me, it's info I can use later to help me, but it just does.

Tried Xeno; did better, lasted through the first missions, had fun grabbing people from above then executing kill moves, sticking my tail through the back of their heads is my fav. Then, in the second mission, I was running along, and I saw a ripped out head a little ways from where a dude blew his own brains out cause he was scared of me. As soon as I saw that head...I remembered...Yautja are here, and then I heard one of them yell and I very quickly exited the game...

I'll probably try Yautja eventually, but I'm sure as soon as I realize that Xenos are hunting me I'm gonna get scared and leave again...
